Found this deal while looking for a lens. It's the marmite of the lens world, but good for starting out. The link is for the Pentax version, but all mounts are the same price. You can find it for as cheap as £112 but from Asian dealers that may incur VAT/customs or worse they could be fakes.

Tamron 70-300mm F4/5.6 DI LD Macro (Pentax AF)
A lightweight, compact, high-image-quality telephoto zoom lens with macro capability of 1:2 that can be used with digital cameras. This lens is a Di type lens using an optical system with improved multi-coating designed to function with digital SLR cameras as well as film cameras.

With this 70-300mm telephoto zoom lens, flipping a macro switch in the focal length range of 180mm to 300mm obtains a maximum magnification ratio of 1:2 at a minimum focus distance as short as 37.4", enabling close-up shots of flowers, insects, and other objects that normally require the use of a specially designed macro lens. Moreover, this is a zoom lens that casually offers the distant capture and foreshortening effect pleasures of the 300mm ultra-telephoto world.

I have the 75-200 I think and its a great lense, I'm v tempted to get this and sell the other !

i have this on the Canon.

its ok. not very fast and slow to focus in low light. saying that its slow to ficus in any light

but

for the price its a good lens to use. nothing special but its by far no means terrible.

To be honest my kit lense was horrible last night trying to focus on the moon at 200mm. Gonna pick this up tonight. Not the best, but at this price it looks pretty good.

Was tempted myself by this before Christmas, when Jessops were selling these for £89.99.

It apparently suffers from chromatic abboration at 300mm so loses points for me on the telephoto basis. As for macro capabilities, its only 1:2.

Obviously this is reflected in the price and I'm not going to vote cold (this is the cheapest deal from what I know) but I think I'd sooner save my cash and buy a dedicated macro lens for more and make do with my 200mm lens in the meantime.

Would strongly recommend getting the Canon 55-250mm IS for £140 or so instead.

Depending on the mount you want, this was only £90 from Jessops before Christmas therefore it's not really that great a deal at the minute imho.

If you're a Canon user then consider getting the 55-250 IS as mentioned above, if you're a Nikon user then I suggest you go for the 55-200. This lens is cheap and performs pretty badly as a result I'm afraid. I'm not really that sure about the Pentax or Sony equivalents.

Would anyone recommend an equivalent with better feedback for a sony alpha?

I want a telephoto lens for my new a35.

beercan?

The word lens does not have an "e" on the end, if that helps.

cheapo

This review compare the Sony 55-200 and the Sony 75-300 almost side by side if that helps...

Then there's this discussion that compares the Sony 55-200 with this tamron...
