One of the better superzooms for Canon EF-S DSLR cameras. Generally well reviewed and a currently unbeatable zoom range. Has been around the £400 mark (UK stock, not grey imports), now down to £330 from Amazon.

Aside from the larger zoom range, would this be a large step up from the excellent (and cheap) Canon 55-250mm?

No, in fact I would expect quality of the Canon at the long end to be better than the Tamron. The big plus of the Tamron is it's extraordinary 18x zoom range, and especially the wide end. This gives you a one lens solution for casual photography.

The 55-250mm will definitely be sharper. As a general rule, the shorter the focal range (in terms of multiplication), the sharper a lens can potentially be, with superzooms suffering in optical quality as the primary shortcoming for their insane zoom range. This one is notable for mitigating that inherent issue to a larger degree than most comparable superzooms.
