This is cheap. I noticed it yesterday on the PC World website. You're basically going to get softer images out of it, than you would with most two lens kits. Still. A cheap deal.

Good price - if only they could do a VC at that price

Great find big Jimmy! How do you know that this is the model with the built-in motor for the D40? I couldn't see the detailed specs you posted on the Currys web page.

I take it there is no way round the £5.95 delivery charge?

That one is no good for a D40 though - no built in AF motor.

It is good for the D40/D40x and D60 it just will not auto focus.

But then restricts use, some spur of the moment photography you would like to rely on AF,

If you're looking at this for a walk-around lens and are not going to be tripod-ing, I'd suggest checking this one out too

Although the focal length is a lot less, it has VR and is a lot cheaper than any VR/OS solutions at 18-200 that I know of.

EDIT: oh and the above does autofocus on the D40\D40x\D60

Yeah, I think your deal is still the best option for a walkabout lens because of the better quality of that lens and the VR . This is tempting for longer ranges, but maybe a Nikon 55-200mm VR would be a bit better for around the same price. Great deal if you want the full 18-200mm though and miles cheaper than the Nikon version.

By the way , this is cheaper if you buy from Dixons:

Sorry to ask such a stupid question, but is it worth getting a Tamron 70mm-300mm over this lens. Im a photo newbie so I guess what im asking is what is the difference betwewen 18-200mm and 70-300mm (given that I have 18-70mm)

Thanks

The advantage of the 18-200 is that it is an excellent range for a walkaround lens, although you tend to sacrifice image quality slightly (not familiar with nikon lenses, being a canon man, so don;t know if this is the case here or not). By adding the 70-300 to your kit, you will be covered for a larger focal range (full 18-300), but will obviously have to chop and change depending on the situation. Your image quality should be better using two seperate lenses though.

i got that from bristol cameras for 32£ incl delivery just before christmas. good lens. it doesnt have a built-in autofocus motor, meaning it will never autofocus on my D40.

thats fine but 18-200mm ,is better for a walk around lens as the 55-200 is restricting if you want to do some closer shots but at £65 thats cheap for that lens

The reason I bought it was so that i dont have to change lenses so often th 70 -300 is great if you want to shoot objects from a distance but if you,re just walking arond and you need closer shots it nicer to that 18mm possiblty.

Well I'm going to try and resist because I just bought a 18-105mm VR but it's a terrific deal.
Heat and rep left.

why are people buying this yes it is cheap but you will realise that when u look back at ur pictures

The reviews of this lens are pretty good. OK it's not as good as the Nikon but some people won't spend £450 on a lens (me for one).
