Tandem Credit Card - Withdraw Cash and Spend Abroad Fee-Free - also 0.5% Cashback for Spending (plus more in post) @ Tandem Bank

Refreshed 28th Mar (Posted 9th Feb)
Tandem bank offer several credit cards depending on your needs, which are suitable for spending abroad due to no fees on worldwide purchases. The Tandem cashback credit card is aimed at users with a good credit history, whilst the Journey credit card is aimed at new to credit users. In addition there is a Tandem Money app that can be used to manage your Tandem credit card, but also has an autosavings feature that identifies small regular amounts to put aside which will be moved to a Tandem account with instant access and 0.5% interest (FSCS protected).

Tandem Cashback Credit Card

3179607.jpg

Not only does this card offer no fee FX spending but you also get .5% Cashback for spending worldwide including at home. This means you get better than the interbank rate as MasterCard rate tends to be less than .2% difference. You also get free withdrawals abroad too but obviously no cashback. If you withdraw in the UK then a charge of 2.5% or £2.50 whichever is greater will be charged but still not bad. For spending and withdrawing cash this is slightly better than the Halifax Clarity Card that gives you nothing.

  • 0.5% cashback on all purchases over £1 worldwide
  • Track spending and cashback earnings in-app
  • No fees on purchases and cash withdrawals abroad
  • Initial credit limits from £500 to £12,000
  • For credit card users with good credit history
  • Representative APR (variable) 18.9%*

*Your final interest rate may be higher based on your individual circumstances

Tandem money app including Autosavings

The Tandem money app is available on Google Play store iTunes. As" target="_blank" class="link" rel="nofollow noopener" title="http://andiTunes.As">andiTunes.As well as being able to using the app to help manage your Tandem credit card, it has an Autosavings feature which you can use to save money. The round up feature rounds up your spending to the next pound and moves the difference into your Autosavings account, with instant access and 0.5% interest (FSCS protected).

Example - every time you spend £2.40 on a coffee, Autosavings will round up the total and put away 60p towards your savings. Over a week, this quickly builds into £10 or £20, which over the course of the year makes £500 - £1000.

Journey Credit Card

3179607.jpg

Tandem also offer the Journey credit card which is aimed more at new to credit users. Whilst it doesn't have the ongoing cashback it still offers no fees on purchases abroad.

  • Helps you to build your credit history
  • No fees on purchases and cash withdrawals abroad
  • Initial credit limits from £150 to £1,200
  • For credit card users with limited credit history
  • Representative APR (variable) 24.9%*

*Your final interest rate may be higher based on your individual circumstances

I've got a Tandem card. App could be a bit better looking IMO but it works very well, first cashback has paid out and the whole process of application, card receipt etc. was smooth.

Tip - get a Curve Blue card for free (don't think we can add referral links on HUKD?), add the Tandem card to it then you can use Tandem like a Debit Card to pay things like my tax bill to HMRC ( ) with no surcharge for being a Credit Card. This means cashback is paid by Tandem on these payments too
It's just my experience, but my Tandem card has been nothing but hassle since last August.
I've just got a letter from the Financial Ombudsman saying that they've told Tandem to give me £30 compensation for hours of wasted time (about 10 phone calls of empty promises) and for misleading and false info on the app - mystery payments appearing and disappearing - "you've paid £5" for example, when my Barclays online banking obviously shows otherwise - and that's just to begin with. No apologies, not answering questions put to them in written complaints etc.
Got an Aqua card and that's been fine, ok low opening limit (but now raised to £2700 after a year) high interest rate (which I've no reason to pay as I pay off in full always) and same cashback.
If an app based credit card has got a totally unreliable app and useless customer service, there's no way I'm counting on it abroad, so I'm cancelling it as soon as the compensation is paid.

I think they also pay cashback on a monthly basis rather than anniversary.

"We will pay you any cashback earned on your Purchases by crediting your Tandem Cashback Credit Card account every month on your statement date. You will earn cashback on each individual Purchase transaction of £1.00 or above. We will add up all your cashback earned during a statement month and credit it to your account on your statement date for that month, reducing the amount you owe us."

I have a Tandem Credit Card. I have it for using abroad and also the cashback. Had some issues with changing the pin, couldn't do it anywhere, they cannot do it either. After all the messing around, it got totally messed up and they had to send me a replacement card.
I use it, then pay off my baalance evry month, so I am making money. No other real issues with the card or the service, Yes they are young and not a huge team, but all my dealings with them have been positive.

I think your PIN issue may have been an anomaly as I just changed mine in an ATM the day I got it, went through like any other card.

Agreed that paying in full each month is the only way it's worthwhile, I setup a DD to clear it each month.
thought id go for this, not sure from the app if ive applied for the credit card or not now lol

Probably just the savings account if you did it as the App sign-up process. For the CC you need to go to the accounts (£) at the bottom then add (+) top right and you'll see the CC application option like this screenshot

Will the Curve trick you mentioned work with every credit card? I've got Captial One -so it would make it so the merchant sees it as a debit card?

Yep, just not Amex at the mo as they're not playing ball with Curve.

You can pick three merchants with Curve to get 1% cashback on for three months too, so can double up the benefits
Heat added.

I was close to opting for a Tandem card a few months ago but ended up going for an Aqua card instead. They offer a £20 Amazon gift card 3 months in, see link below.

And offers 0.5% back on all purchases and can use abroad / buy online in foreign currencies without fees. Only main difference is that it doesn't pay out monthly. This wasn't an issue for me.

Oh and at the time I was able to get £31 Quidco but I don't believe this is available right now. But still worth it for Amazon users!

Ah ok, good point for people who don't plan to pay off in full each month.

Although from the research I've done, you're probably better off not looking for rewards cards if you plan to use them as traditional credit cards ('loan cards')

In other words, rewards cards are optimised to be used as charge cards.

Cashback paid at anniversary
I thought charging a fee for using a credit card had been stopped over a year ago, cash debit or credit all the same price should be charged.

Had one since January 2018. No issues. It's my primary card for overseas spending and backup card (where I can't use AmEx) for UK payment. App could be better. Also their customer service is only open Monday to Friday (at least it was a few months ago).
I've got this card and it's been flawless for me, but admittedly I haven't had to rely on their customer services for much. Decent referral scheme as well!

I have a similar issue I lost my card and too much hassle with this company, rude staff. They have no idea what they are doing.
I was turned down for their Credit Card, which left a black mark on my credit score. I have never before in my life been turned down for a financial product, and would consider myself to be a model customer.

Based on my experience, I wouldn't risk applying for this!
Can my starling deal be refreshed please. That coupled with this is brilliant
I’ve had a tandem CC for a year, never had any problems with it. App is quite user friendly just wish they’d add Apple Pay! Heat added
I've not really had any problems with Tandem, a few times where they haven't trusted the location.

I've also had about £60 paid as cashback in just under a year.

Had exactly the same experience last night!
Don't bother guys! i had tandem card and was a real struggle to close the account, it took months. Their app is rubbish, when you make a card payment abroad it takes few days before it appears on the app. I'm using Santander Zero at the moment, transactions appear instantly and retail offers cashback is worth more than 0.5% cashback.

Curve accepts all non-amex cards as far as i'm aware. I've been using curve flawlessly since it was in Beta a few years ago. I generally carry my curve and my amex with me and nothing else. No problems to date.
Cant use curve to pay a financial bill eg credit card bill or mortgage etc (HMRC different) or things like petrol (unless that's changed in recent years).
I've before now used it to buy a car, earning points on a credit card, from a dealer who only takes debit cards. Brilliant system.

Noooooooooooo really?! OMG. You just made my day. My Amex bills are >£5k this month so 0.5% is not to be sniffed at!
Tried to get one of these but the app didn't work. Not promising, and I wouldn't try again.
Tandem are having issues with as far as im aware Asda and Tesco petrol stations, my card was declined in an Asda petrol station. I have used my card there many times with no issues before. Just making you aware they are working on it.

Ive had my card for a while now and never had any problems with payment other then as above and the store "Savers" when using the tandem card contactless. The error in the app would would show up as a "fraud transaction" and be blocked. No idea if it was ever fixed as not tried it ever since.

I got the Tandem credit card. You're better off being referred by a friend when you apply as you both get a £10 Amazon gift voucher that way.
