thanks.

How would it know how much fat and water you have? could you weigh yourself and then go for a pee and see a reading of less water after?

They pass a very small electrical current through your body and measure the resistance [of fat and water].
The cheap ones are usually quite inaccurate, but as long as they are consistent it's fit for purposes. Reviews on other sites are mixed, for this one regarding consistency.

Well I'm on my get fit again scheme so I need some motivation might as well give these a try at monitoring my progress,

I have found the scales to be consistent for me, compared to a normal 'cheap' one I have, which is quick easy to get reading.
The scales shows Weight, body fat, body water, phsique (muscle), BMR (Bascal Metabolic Rate), Visceral Fat.
(It requires your height and age)

Searching on the web I found the following formula, to see what my calorie intake should be :-
Required calories per day = BMR x Harris Benedict Formula
Harris Benedict Formula
Hope that helps someone.
