Suits all music
The Tannoy Mercury 7.2 is an evenly balanced speaker that’s designed to get the best from all types of music. It’s suitable for bookshelf mounting but is at its best when stand mounted. Larger than the 7.1 model, it gives an even deeper bass and greater volume in larger rooms.

High resolution
Featuring a Nitro-urethane damped tweeter, the Mercury 7.2 will hit frequencies as high as 32,000Hz Although this is well above what we can hear it does mean that the high frequencies we can hear are less affected by harmonic distortion – making it the ideal match for Hi-Res music sources.

Punchy bass – even when using smaller amps
Featuring a 6 inch bass cone, the Mercury 7.2 reaches right down to 42Hz. This gives it a deep, extended bass that can only be bettered by adding a subwoofer. What’s more, thanks to the high efficiency design, the Mercury 7.2 can easily be driven by most amplifiers – even if they’re lower powered. At the other end of the scale, a power handling of up to 200 watts means the Mercury 7.2 can handle some of the most powerful amps around.

Smart good looks
With a choice of Black Oak, Walnut or Oak vinyl wraps, there’s a wide choice of colours to suit your home. To protect the drive units from accidental damage, removable grilles are fitted as standard.

Good-looking, versatile and great-sounding, the Tannoy Mercury 7.2 is a reminder of just why the Tannoy brand is so famous.

I'm not a books person to be honest, will they be OK on a shelf where I keep my collection of the 3rd pages from The Sun? If not can you recommend any cheep books that would work with those speakers?

Absolutely not. These require a bookshelf to sound their best. These need to reverberate through pages and pages of books (and specifically also, their covers), the more books you have the better the sound will be. Initially I had them on a shelf with only 5 books and they sounded terrible, I've since purchased a thousand books from various second hand stores and now these speakers sound fantastic!

Expensive at full price but for this money they have to be worth considering.
Is the price for 1 speaker or a pair? The website says 'per pair'

They are passive speakers. You need an amplifier to connect them to.

For inexpensive options
Lepy 2024A+ - £27 if u don't need Bluetooth
SMSL SA-36A plus - £55 if u want a better amp with Bluetooth
Do these not work at all without an amp or are they just incredibly quiet? I've never really understood amps. My phone (Mi A1) contains a 10V amp, allegedly.

You shouldn’t connect speakers to a headphone output. If you were to get any sound it would be very quite and distorted, and you risk damaging your phone. Hifi speakers need much more power to drive them compared to the tiny speakers inside headphones.

Oh ffs!

I've been delaying a project in the bathroom for three years because I didn't have time to research cheap amps.

Having been awake after feeding the baby, I've now studied several graphs and read a couple of articles and for my needs the Lepy seems perfect.

Out comes the drill!!!
If your local RS has any in stock???? Grab them for £69, just remember to have an amplifier with a decent Rms output, lower powered amps don't show these cabinets to their potential

If you want a nice small amp for Bluetooth take a look at these:

I had the first version and now the newer stereo version powering two decent speakers and the sound is brilliant.

Yes, if you want to look like a clown!

IIRC, that lepy amp tends to fluctuate in price a bit and there may be a few different versions of it.

Why do you need such a tiny amp out of interest?

Brought the Lepy 2024 a couple of weeks ago. Really amazed st how good this little £25 amp is. Its’s tiny and the sound quality really is decent with good speakers. To be honest I don’t think it sounds barely any worse than my £250 Marantz amplifier!
One of my Monitor Bronze speakers has developed a fault out of warranty. Would these be a decent replacement for general hi fi usage hooked up to my Marantz amp?

I dont think it is. Read Big.Overdraft's link to tannoy reviews.
Yeah think I’ll just upgrade to the Bronze 2s at £249

I've bought a Google Music Cast and a pair of waterproof ceiling speakers to go in the bathroom and needed something to connect the two. Honestly, a project I've been waiting to complete for at least two years maybe even three.

The Lepy will be housed in the attic and aside from enough quality to be safe doesn't need to sound that great over my tone deaf singing abilities...

Thanks!
My Tannoy M2s are still going strong with great sound & they're 20+ years old. So long as Tannoy brand hasn't been bought over by Mike Ashley these should be a great bang for buck deal!

Interesting.
Would rather buy the Q Acoustics 3010s personally. Cost a little bit more, but are a better budget speaker IMO. If the money is there, upgrade further to the 3010i’s. I have the older 2010i’s and they are fantastic. Can still pick them up from Q Acoustics for under £85 here - qacoustics.co.uk/q-a…wcB
Legend says they once sold for £229

That's exactly the setup I've got. Works well, I don't particularly need speakers in the bathroom, but they were their from a previous owner. So I used a tiny amp and a Google Chromecast Audio and it works fantastic.

EDIT: Just checked and it's the Lepy 2024a I've got and I've had it since March 2016 and not missed a beat, it's permanently switched on.
