Stick my neck out here. Best speakers you can buy for under 500.

@polly69 I am a new editor working for Pepper, but I hope to be part of the community too. I welcome any feedback while I get to grips with finding great deals, so please don’t hesitate to get in touch. Cheers!
Tempted to purchase, only just got myself a starter turntable setup with some Spektor 2 speakers, however these would go with the furniture!

White version for £20 less at Peter Tyson, petertyson.co.uk/tannoy-revolution-xt-6f?whf=

Sounds (eh?!), like Tannoy want to shift some stock as they're £500 everywhere I've seen.

10 year limited warranty, not much goes wrong with speakers in the first decade. It's after that when rubber surrounds or drivers start to warp.
Proceed with caution. Quick glance at What HiFi (not the world's most neutral of reviewers*) say it's an ok speaker.
Go and listen to 'em before you decide. The only way to buy hifi.

* For decades anything Marantz released received praise in abundance from What HiFi. Even when it was complete and utter 5hyt3, they would find some way of spinning it (much like AutoExpress is with VW's cars).

I have the version without the fancy feet. Running with a 40w Marantz amp, they sound exceptional.

I know it's a bad comparison, but i've got a £1200 bose soundbar and subwoofer in another room, and these things blow it out of the water. Like night and day.

One of the best purchases I've ever made, and it will last for decades if you want.

Even a pair of recycled tins of Heinz Cream of Tomato soup, (or Campbell's if you wanted to go designery) would sound better than Bose.
How they've got away with pretending to be HiFi speakers is beyond me. Biggest con job since they devised the Sounddock for the iPod, then they started getting too arrogant.
£550 for a stereo alarm clock with bluetooth!
How different would these be to the mercury range? I have the mercury 5 set playing an Onkyo 727 and I hv never been satisfied
KEF Q550 £799 at Richer Sounds but apparently they're offering 20% OFF with voucher code KEF20 * - must be bought in store.

KEF's sound signature is smooth and wide open soundstage, bass not their strongest suit in the budget to £1k price range and really start opening up when bi-amped.

Tannoy's - tend to offer more bass, so good for some Led Zep drum solos, but the rest of their sound signature isn't all that. Just my opinion and a very broad generalisation, but when comparing at similar price points, that's what I found.

These - petertyson.co.uk/bow…D=U
are what you really want to get in your house. But just look at the price, and that's cheap compared to some of the other alternatives.

Same here
They have some good deals here from time to time.

They just don't want to do a deal on one of their last few remaining Monitor Audio Gold C350 Speaker. Which is what I'm after at the moment.

I’ll personally never forget their review of the Xbox One S - apparently 4K HDR lacked subtlety? And the sound is “lean”

Hi
I have KEF Q500s (3 years old). Are Q550 or 800-d3 worth the upgrade?
Thanks
I used to sell speakers for a long time, including Monitor Audio, Kef, Q Acoustic etc And these were one of my favourite sounding speakers. The build quality is excellent. They are not to be confused with Tannoy’s budget Mercury or Eclipse ranges. These are very much a premium product and well worth a listen!

Some of the best speakers I've heard in my life have been Tannoy dual-concentric speakers. Used to have a lovely pair of Lancasters that were sadly just too darn big to keep.

Yeah they also have the black version at that price on eBay, but the oak veneer is worth that extra £20 to fit in with the rest of your furniture right?

I would say that these are a step up from the Mercury range, as they feature the "Dual Concentric Driver" and have a higher price range.
Would these be a significant step up from my Mission m33i floor standers?
Currently running a 5.1 system with Monitor MR Centre, MR2's for Fronts and MR1's for rear. I'm doing a cinema room and want to replace the rear speakers but would these be too powerful? i.e. would I be better off putting these at the front and having the MR2's as the rears?

The Q500's are commented as slightly lean (something my almost twenty year old Q35.2's also suffer from).
Very good review here theabsolutesound.com/art…e=1
some of the comments seem to indicate the build or cabinet design doesn't do the drivers justice.

According to some of the reviews I've read on the Q550 indicated they've done some work on the internal baffles and a different approach to the rear firing bass port.

When you listen to your Q500's, do they do everything you want them to do, or do you avoid certain music or cranking it up or tweaking tone controls to get the bass response you want?

I'm not a fan of the Tannoy sound myself, but the 800-d3's look like the last pair of traditional floorstanders as their website seems to indicate they've abandoned the traditional loudspeaker in favour of lifestyle type products.

Listen to 'em to judge for yourself.
(It took me years to trust my ears and not get seduced by the looks of HiFi equipment.)

All the QVC watchers buy Bose gear.

Totally bowled over by their demonstration of the candle-flames dancing to the bass then adds the perspex "representation" of the soundguide and the candles get blown out!?
Wembley stadium soundcheck, one two, one two. Testing.
"Oi! just try the speakers with a Clipper lighter - job done."

Fool watching this stuff thinks, "must get a Bose, everybody's got themselves one of them and the power of the bass must be amazing for it to be able to snuff out a candle"
Talk about snakeoil. The guy from Bose they invite on QVC hasn't got a scooby doo about sound.
That Bose soundstation or whatever it's called. Talk about an overpriced turd.
Oooh look, it has bluetooth (available as something that looks like a McDonalds serving tray placed underneath the expensive alarm-clock radio).

Like someone I know who loves his music, but 30 years later, STILL hasn't got himself a HiFi system and yet every couple of years buys the latest Bose systems.
I'm like - "What are doing you fool?!"

Makes me laugh when I go to someone's house and pride of place on the kitchen worktop or dining room sideboard is a Bose.
