Please do not buy ANYTHING from Tesco counters- thety have form for re-wrapping out of date produce and putting new sell by dates on it. Please google the documentaries which caught them doing this a few years back. From personal experience this happened to me- coincidentally enough with this very cheese. I ordered some to be delivered and when I received it it had the cheese with the original sell by date (almost two weeks out of date) inside a bag with the new (false) sell by date shown on the outside. They had obviously forgotten to remove the cheese from the original packaging. .When I contacted their head office they were completely unconcerned and I eventually got a completely nonsensical and non-believable explanation. I still have the communications between myself and the Chairmans's office , along with the photos of the packaging with the original and false sell by dates on the product if anyone is interested. Selling out of date cheese would probably not be such a serious health risk, but I am led to believe both by information from investigations documented in the mediia and conversations with current employees of Tesco, that this practice is still common even with fresh meat etc.
Buy at your peril!!
Thanks for info
I buy a lot of cheese from the Deli at Morrisons, Their cheese and other supermarkets come sealed in up to 3kg blocks from the supplier, usually with a 3 month sell by date on them if fresh. Once they open it and cut it down to sell and metal has touched it, it becomes 2 weeks and they reseal the pieces and add their own label

I always buy the full block as I cold smoke them for myself and friends and family. Always prefer counter cheese as it never seems to have that wet slime coating on the outside that the smaller mass packaged version of the same cheese has.

If I bought a full block today i would expect the suppliers date to show something like Use by 31st march 2020, and even if the packaging hasn't been opened or touched, the supermarket would add their own label after they had weighed it to price it, to show a sell by date of Jan 11th 2020 on the same piece of cheese over the original untouched wrapping
OK price for a 'branded' cheddar, but Aldi's and Lidl's 'own brand' (all varieties) is, IMO, better cheddar and £4.47 / £4.73 per kg.
half price @ £5.50kg so at some point this was £11kg just so they could mark it down a week later to £5.50kg and not break advertising rules

Try the lidl vintage Red Leicester £1.79 for 200g ( or so) ... It's absolutely fab ... Like crack cocaine it's so addictive
