Good news for Tesco mobile customers who can now call their loved ones at off peak times (I.e after 8pm on weekdays and anytime at weekends) free of charge Please note this feature does not start until 20:00 tonight.

The mobile wing of Supermarket giant Tesco, Tesco Mobile, has today announced that they’re giving free “unlimited” evening and weekend calls to all 5.2 million of their customers, which is intended to help them stay connected with their loved ones during the Coronavirus (COVID-19) lockdown.

The change for both Pay-As-You-Go and Pay Monthly customers will go live from 8pm today. On top of that they’re also offering “free access” to support websites (via mobile broadband), including NHS and government guidance , without using your data allowance.

I thought they stopped peak and off peak times in the 90s. Surely we just have a set of minutes to use per month regardless of time of day?

Yeah peak/off peak is a very landline thing, but I suppose with lots of people working from home possibly from Mobile's and lots stuck at home phoning friends/relatives the network will be very busy during the day and if they made it free it could overload it, so off peak is helpful and better than nothing
Lol what is off-peak nowadays? More like all day

But I dont think Tesco mobile have a landline / broadband business anymore (I could be wrong but I'm sure they closed it in 2015 when they had all the redundancies)

I think the original poster needs to be clearer with what they are trying to communicate as a deal

I'm with Tesco and just got the text from them.

No I just meant when you hear the phrase peak/ off peak it's usually associated with land lines not mobile

So basically anything between 8pm and 8am is unlimited and doesn't come out of your allowance.

Makes sense now. Thanks for clarifying (I'm with TM and didnt get this message but good to know!)
still put there prices up though
People still call each other?!

That's inflation for you!

Is it not expected to talk at least for a few sentences before sending the snaps with your kit off?
Handy if I use up my 5000 minutes
I won't gain anything as on contract with no limits on calls
Sky gave 10GB of data free, what Tesco is giving really isn’t that great unless you’re on pay as you go...

Individuals with low usage should be with 3 mobile. Tesco payg charges are up to 10 times what 3 charge

25p vs 3p per call minutes
10p vs 1p per MB
Use WiFi call, FaceTime Audio, What’s app etc over WiFi. Talk as much as you want for free. Jobs jobbed. FaceTime Audio is better quality than standard phone calls too.

I think if you have an elderly relative that is on pay as you go you should move them on to a cheap sim only deal. They need all the money they can get most of the time, and pay as you go is not beneficial to anyone.
Well done, tesco

payg is very cheap for low usage. I put £5 on my phone every 6 months as generally use WhatsApp for calls /texts. Sim only monthly can mount up over a year

Yeap.I dont think this deal is quite as good as some of you think it is.5.2 million customers and how many exactly is this benefiting ?.The pay as you go people ?,which i wouldnt think that market is to big a percentage of there customers. And then you have the sim only or contract people and i would of thought even though there will be some people on limited minutes contracts the majority these days go for unlimited on minutes and text. This must be getting hot because people arent taking in whats written, they should of upgraded any customer not on unlimited minutes upto unlimited. You dont need to give people free data its all about talking to people and keeping in contact very very few people will have the internet and not a phone. But if it does help the few give them up to 5Gb a month.
