Tesco Play sand 10kg bags are currenlty £4 for 2 or £2.98 each.
Kids seem to go through sand like anything and this is a bargin compared to ELC.
Its also much finer than the stuff you get from DIY stores.

Stock up before summer eventually gets here!!

Kids sand has been chemically tested to make sure there's nothing nasty present that could hurt children that stuff won't have been so could have any number of contaminants in it that would not affect plastering but could affect a child. Also you don't want sand so fine it's dusty and then gets inhaled potentially causing asthma symptoms.

Gamble if you like but I know which I will use for my kids....

Oh and stay away from treated sand from ELC that stuff is nasty had some it bleached clothes and when it was spread round the garden by kids killed any plant it went near obviously impreganted with bleach!!!

Yes does it stain when wet? The play sand is finely filtered and certainly doesn't stain clothers etc

Need to refill the sandpit having just cleaned it out and it takes good few large bags so cheaper is good!

Seems to be contradictory:

"Kids sand has been chemically tested to make sure there's nothing nasty present..."
"...stay away from treated sand from ELC that stuff is nasty..."

i bought 1 bag the other day then relised that argos do a 15kg bag for the same price:-(

I wonder if they do Tesco Value Sand*

*May contain glass.

How is that contradictory ffs? What has chemical testing got to do with ELCs anti-bacterial sand

It's chemically tested to make sure it doesn't contain and asbestos particles which as i'm sure you know can cause severe lung problems.

All I was then saying is that ELC have a type of sand which they claim is anti-bacterial and it bleaches clothes and kills plants so despite the "safety" properties of it killing anything that might get put in there (ie cat poo) I would advise against using it.

I knew someone would say this, make sure it is only kids play sand you purchase as others can contain bits of glass etc,

We cleaned out the sand pit and went to Tesco, they had none, had no idea when they were getting any and I had a very annoyed 3 year old! So may want to check before you go I just ordered 2 15kg bags from Argos for £5.98 which works out about the same price, going to pick them up before I do the school run!

The other poster is referring to a specific product to avoid (treated ELC sand) as being nasty and having bleaching qualities

think silver sand from the likes of b&q will be the cheapest and best for the little 'uns.

Sand out of the beach will be full of beasties, and made up of shell fragments from dead wee beasties, as well as animal ordure. And unlike when it's on the beach it won't be getting washed by the sea so it will get more and more rank.

Could you please tell me which builders merchants sell this quantity at under this price?

Think the prices may have changed slightly now, seeing how this thread started 4 years, 6 months ago
