Instore only, discontinued online was £19.99

The 8 way extension lead is an ideal energy saving product with a 2 metre cable. This extension lead, with neon, provides high surge protection.
If a TV is plugged into the red socket then when this is switched off it will automatically turn off all plugs in green sockets. The black sockets will stay on continuously to avoid products losing settings, Sky TV as an example.

In what way is having 8 appliances plugged in "energy saving"?

-That's how!

does the master socket stay live, so that you can switch the TV, or whatever device, back on again, and everything else will come on? or does it use some kind of infrared receiver?

Normally this setup is when the red socket drops it power requirements below a set amount it turns off the green sockets. When the red sock increases it demand for power over the set limit then it powers up the green sockets. Becuase of this TV and Computers have different devices due to the different 'off' power required.

If the voltage drops enough to the red plug ie when the tv goes into standby, then the green plugs are switched completely off. They become live again once the tv comes out of standby. The 2 grey plugs are always live for Sky+, DVD recorders or anything else that you don't want to power down when the tv is in standby.

Ive had one a while but it wasn't very reliable with both a 37" plasma and a 40" LCD set that I've owned. It was almost like it couldn't detect the set dropping into standby and kept all the green plugs live like a standard extension would. Worse it ocassionally wouldn't detect the set coming out of stanby leaving everything else off with no way to turn them on. The only solution was to turn it off at the wall, leave it for a few minutes to reset, and then turn everything back on again.
