Yes they do

Oli

Why are people voting this as cold?

Is there something wrong with this bit of kit?

Seems like a bit of fun to me, especially if you've got a few old hard drives knocking around.

I agree, both myself and a mate from work have plenty of 80gb HD's lying about - picked one up for £12.60 each...cant be bad!

question: can we use it as a multimedia player ?
i.e to copy movies and dvd's and divx on it to play on tv ?

2nd question, will this be 3.5" IDE drives?

Does the size of the hard drive have to be the ones they state (ie. 40/80/160GB)? I have a 60GB hard drive spare and was wondering if I could use that.

Looks like my 1620 at home and if its got a firmware on it later than 1.8 you may as well bin it as it will be useless. Check this thread here for all the problems with the latest firmware digitalspy.co.uk/for…e=4
Honestly, save your money cos unless it has an old firmware it'll be useless (luckly I managed to exchange mine for a 1.8 unit so works ok but still has many, many bugs!!)

Yeh, would give this a miss, latest firmware just makes things worse!

They have a mixture of 1.9, 2.1 & 2.3

We have been told by the manufacturer that they will be sending another update out shortly but I can't promise that will happen as it's out of my control.

They do use 3.5inch IDE HDD. We have tested 80gb & 160Gb but other sizes may work but I can't confirm that at the moment.

Oli

I was given a technosonic pvr101 which i believe is the same as these , with the old firmware it was great . But the new firmware has rendered it unusable and im awaiting another over the air upgrade which will hopefully fix it.

If you have a spare 15 quid and a hard drive i would give it a go as a bit of fun.

And they go for about 30 quid on ebay

voted hot for cheapness!!!

Bigpockets;1639978

Yes they doOli

so whats rong with the front panel and rear panel thats on them ?? do they still make the units ???? and is that you are just selling old tat ?

this looks a good price but may be just a waste of money

2.1 and 2.3 are the firmwares to avoid. 1.9 is ok but still has problems

I only answered yes to one question but I think I can still pull it off. Should I bother?

I bought ordered one and the hard drive, its a bit of fun isnt it.

Bigpockets;1639978

Yes they doOli

so dont need to buy a front panel its got at the bottom?

seems like a good deal to me if so!!

also, will it work as a freeview box, if u dont get a hard drive? or will it not boot?

Works with any IDE hard drive? I've got a couple of 10 / 20 Gb's I could hot swap. Possible?

if 20gbs worked it would be sweet, got loads lying around which are worthless, but 20gb is probably still a lot of tv! hand hovering over buy on response to this q

Anyone know what model these WD 80GB HDD are?

Firmware = useless - Yes could be a fun little project, but whats the point of having a PVR that gets no signal or some other problem?????

BIGPOCKETS - You are well aware of the Firmware problems - You remind me of a 60's market trader from Peckham - 'Rodney you plonker'!

BEWARE - Anybody (and I mean Anyone!) with the help 15yr old child can now setup a website to flog you there knockoffs from the local market store - just cause it looks much more flashier and swish on a website, doesn't make it any more reliable than the market store. Do you really have any idea who is sitting behind that computer/website?
Many large companies have websites now, but this is where smaller 1 man bands play on, by creating similiar looking websites, but not having the quality of product or the same customer service - did you realise that any returns to Bigpockets are at your own cost? And thats only if they except your return to start with - look at the small print.

Returned because of problems PVR (could so many returns have been because of the Firmware by any chance?? Why were they planning to rebrand them? Could this be because of the previous brands association with useless Firmware?), you put it together yourself and useless Firmware = £30

New decent brand PVR = £45

You decide!

just ordered 3 plus an orgasm keyring to get free delivery! LOL

went straight over to ebay and got a 40gb harddrive for £11 delivered. so £20 doesnt seem bad even if it does have faults!
this'll be my first go with electronics so whoever else gets one and knows what to do to get it going then all help will be greatly recieved!

I'm not sure if it comes part assembled, but I'd expect...

Undo 3 screws on the rear, lift the lid off, screw the HDD into a cradle, connect the IDE + Power to the HDD, screw the cradle in place, and put the lid back on

can i record on to it from my ntl box?

The company is genuine i have ordered from the more then a dozen times and when ever i have a problem they fix it (even when its out of there quoted cover period and ESPECIALLY if they suspect a fault with the design) so CS is par And i know that the people sitting behind the computer are genuine and are sitting in a large warehouse, maybe you should just google the company and you will find out how long its been operating. OH AND ALL COMPANYS MAKE YOU PAY FOR A RETURN AT YOUR OWN COST IF YOU CHANGE YOUR MIND

philjoy;1641785

No, it will only record the Freeview signal decoded by the box itself; there is no video encoder in this (or almost any other Freeview PVR - only a few top end ones will do this).

Hmm, worth a read of these customer reviews first I think:

pvruk.co.uk/rev…101

p.s. I don't think Big pockets integrity should come into this, they have been going for a while now and I don't think they are in the game of ripping off people, far from it. These things might actually work for some people and it might suit the sort of person that likes a challenge! Anyway you never know if updated firmware might be around the corner.

Absolutely. The description on their web site is VERY explicit. If you're a novice, forget it, buy a ready built one. If you've got a tenner and some time to waste (plus a HD), then its worth a bit of fun that might end up being worthwhile. I don't think you can question the morals, trading position or otherwise of a company that is so up front it's unreal.

Do you recon this could be used to record a CCTV channel plugged in via say Scart? For the price it could be worth a punt maybe?

No it can't

what realblender said.
the software on these things is crucial, and unless you fancing programming that (which you can't without the source and specs anyway) forget it.

Price probably reflects what a can of worms these units are! Pity, was up for a few.......

Can you only record from Freeview - i was assuming i could record from analogue 1,2,3,4,5 not being in a Freeview area.

yes, they only have a freeview tuner so you can only record from that.

I've used BigPockets many a time. Absolutley no problems what so ever (even with recon stuff). Dont knock the seller because of firmware issue, A huge amount of PVR, MP3 players... etc have firmware issues and he's not hidden the what firmwares the units are (previous post).

Does anyone know if you can downgrade the firmware?

Also, anyone got a link to the firmware download website?

Sin

I have taken the plunge on one of these. I have an 80gb IDE drive gathering dust, and I only want a freeview box for the bedroom so I will see how I get on.

From what I have read I certainly wouldn't get one of these to use full time.

Just ordered one Even if its not great I have Sky+ this is just for a bed room cant really go wrong for 15 quid when you have a hard disk doing nothing stuck on a shelf, if its that bad i will just ebay it lol, to be honest its not bad just to have a play with for 15 quid

The machine would be good if it worked. I do feel sorry for you if you get firmware 2.1 or 2.3 cos it is unusable (it'll constantly miss recording, everytime you change channel you'lleither get a no signal notification or you'll get no sound. Like i said i had to change mine for a 1.8 firmware version and it still has problems but they are light years away from the probs on 2.1 and 2.3. You cant download the firmware as its an over the air download and since technotrend ****ed everything up with the last firmware we've not had any response from them. I would not expextanother firmware download any time in the future.
