Believe what, exactly? The pagan festival of Yule? Putting baubles on a tree just like in the Bible?

Hope you're not putting your life on hold in the hope of something better afterwards, as it is all you're getting.:p

We don't get much choice. Xmas is an excuse for total inefficiency for about 2 months & for everything to stop for at least 2 weeks.

We might as well party as there is nothing else.

Personally I hate Xmas but the book might be amusing.

I'm just voting hot cos I'm an atheist

touché!!!!!

A mid winter festival is an age old celebration and as has already been said dates well before Christianity, religious celebrations merge and mutate and I think most people agree that in recent years a religious Christmas has merged to become something completely different. It means many things to many different people, friends, family, exchanging gifts, good food, a period to forget worries, a period to reflect on those lost maybe. These experiences would still continue around December 25th every year even if the whole of Christian belief imploded and it's followers dwindled to nothing.

We rationalist-atheists should treasure and celebrate xmas with gusto! It is a charming time of year when we can celebrate the naiveté of humanity. A time to laugh at the world around us - at the make-believe Santas and the make-believe gods. I can't wait!

Thanks OP - ordered a copy

Not me for sure:) I have not bought into the Christmas / Pagan Festival.

Jesus Christ was not born in December with the snow crisp and soft and even, but probably in September when the shepherds had no problem sitting out in the field. The main reason I don't celebrate Christmas.

straight to that so called hell you Christians speak of :w00t:

As a atheist why would you mention Xmas and trying to adorne it with negativity? Do you think Nazis celebrated Jew festivals?

Just you guys go way over there, the other side of that cliff.
We can enjoy ourselves over here quite well. No need to make books to poke fun.

If you are a true Christian it's you duty to the Lord to vote cole!

Remember, not only is he omnipresent, he also knows which way you vote!

If we're going with the story that the birth coincided with the calling of a census and expecting people to travel back to their home towns, it would almost certainly have been during the warmer months. It's highly unlikely they would have called it in the middle of winter. And if shepherds were spending the whole night in a field, it was probably during lambing season, i.e. spring.

Either way, the mid-winter festival pre-dates Christianity by a substantial margin. The church needed a date for Christmas and picked the December date as it was already an established festival. I'm a non-believer and I don't have a problem with celebrating it. It would be nice if the mother in law decided not to impose herself on us, though.

I certainly wouldn't be voting Minogue after last night, christian or not.

It wasn't. Christmas was invented by the Roman Catholic Church to pull in a few more coins - the 'mas' ending is the giveaway. The season was hijacked by the that church, but there were others who never celebrated it. It is a pagan festival, and as a Christian (born again variety) I reject it as a true Christian festival. My earlier post states the true fact that Christ was born in September.

The Festivities have been around alot lot longer than Christianity.

I don't get the Nazi notions on this thread! There were both religious and atheist Nazis, so I don't think anyone will win this kind of arguement, and is pretty stupid and childish in my opinion.

I love HotUKDeals! Where else would you get a debate about the existence of God along with an offer for half-price beans?

My thought: no atheist has ever killed another atheist because his beliefs about the non-existence of God differed sufficiently from his own.

It's only a good deal if you really want it .... but that goes for all deals posted on HUKD.

I'd buy it, if I wasn't a Christian:)

I love a good debate but at the end of the day you cannot prove the existance of God, I've had many heated discussins around the dinner table on the subject.
To me there just came a point where everything seemed to fall into place and I had a total conviction that there was a God and things just 'felt right'.
Now I expect to get mocked or laughed at for that, but again, I think this all falls back to individuals experience:thumbsup:

Why ? Each to their own I say  world would be pretty dull if we all felt and belived the same things

I believe in aliens.......would probably be more mocked for that

Why do christians have to vote this cold? and why do athiests have to vote it hot?

Surely, christians should be just as intersted in other peoples views as athiests are in the faiths that others hold dear.

I'm a life long athiest, but I'd like my sons to have a good understanding about world religions so that they can better understand the people they meet everyday and what drives/motivates them.

I guess this book is a bit of fun based on an athiests view of being caught up in a Christian festival .. where's the harm in that ...

After all, there are thousands of world religions and only one of them can be right. Being an athiest I've got just as good odds of being right about what happens on my death as a Christian, Hindu, Muslim or Scientologist.

If you think it's a good price for the book - vote hot. If not vote cold. That should be the only consideration.

But then again I still think magnets are magic!

Good on you:thumbsup: I believe that evolution should be taught so that believing children have a good grasp of what others think.

BTW nobody, Christian or atheist has said they have voted cold. I have not voted either way.
