I know it's only £1 but it's just a news website? Paying to read the news s …I know it's only £1 but it's just a news website? Paying to read the news seems silly when you can find it elsewhere for free.

It depends on your faith in the more traditional news outlets and the value you put on journalism. The general standards of writing in the mainstream media has dipped immeasurably over the past 15 years, but that doesn't mean that there aren't a bunch of hungry, talented journalists out there.

It's happened because of the strains put on writers and what they produce by the huge conglomerates that own the vast majority of the media in the UK (and beyond). That means - as I'm sure you're only too aware - that journalism has become less about investigation and getting to the heart of a story and more about being the first to tweet or react, so you are leading the race for likes and retweets.

If you want to invest in good writers and good writing, and also show newcomers that there is a pathway to a standard of journalism that's a world away from the sporting version of Love Island, then £1 a month really is nothing.

I get at least 10 articles a month from the Atlantic which I a) really, really enjoy and b) take a minimum of 10 mins reading time each. 100 minutes is roughly the length of a movie and given a trip to the flicks is at least £10 these days, then a quid represents incredible value to me. It won't be for everyone, but that's ok.

You also get ad free podcasts, which is worth it for not hearing a betting/manscaped ad every 10 bloody minutes (edited)

Genuine question. Why is this news outlet so highly regarded

I like the high standard of reporting, but I mostly appreciate that they're not beholden to clicks and engagement - they don't need to use clickbait or sensationalise, and the level of debate and respect in the comments is very rare in other sports reporting arenas.

If you have a BT broadband or tv account you can get a free years subscription for the athletic. You need to check in your account pages for details of this.

If you like journalism that disappears rapidly up its own self important butthole and shadily auto renewing subscriptions at vastly inflated prices over the initial discount, this is the service for you!

To the OP, this represents good value to anyone who is down for what's on offer - so thank you

Hmm.. No cricket coverage? I like the idea of a dedicated broadsheet-style sport website but the decision to cut out all sport with British interest apart from football, golf, boxing and MMA means I'm not interested in paying money for it. I'll stick with the Guardian (which I'm subscribed to) and The Times (where they gave me a very reduced rate after I asked to quit after the initial £1 introductory offer) (edited)

Is it possible to cancel my sub and then re-sign up this? If not, I will just use a different email as I don't want to chance this deal being expired next month

I did. Just cancelled my existing subscription which was due next month. When I clicked the offer link it kept redirecting me to the homepage so I just stopped the browser loading, put my card details in and it synced to my account as I was already logged in.

Timely reminder for my subscription, next payment was due 6th September for £59.99 after 15 months for £29.99. I went to cancel and got the offer for £1.50 a month to be paid upfront so went for that for the sake of re-signing up on a new email address.

I’ve quite enjoyed the long form, in depth journalism. Football has a couple of great local journalists for Nottm Forest so they get great coverage too. The Fantasy Football discussion is also great if you’re in to that too. For £1.50 a month it’s great value, that’s like two newspapers a month.

Thanks to your deal op I was reminded my £1 deal was probably renewing at £7.99 soon. Turns out it was August 14th - tomorrow!!!! Cancelled and resubbed on a new account to this £1 deal. Thanks so much

I missed this when renewed a few days ago. Had the similar £1 deal posted here last year.

When went to cancel I was offered £1.50 per month but had to pay annually. £17.99 for 12 months, paid upfront. Not quite as good as this deal, but still worth it.

Quality journalism such as this is WELL worth it. If anything, this last year using this subscription has got me considering paying the sub for mainstream news sites. It must be future. (edited)

When the product is free you are the product. Additionally trawling through websites adverts and privacy settings with your data being sold to others so your email inbox gets swamped with spam causing you to spend time and possibly more money getting a good email provider with effective spam filters is all a real pain.

Paying £1 per month to support quality journalism and avoid the click-bait is …. We’ll just read above.

Sounds like a good deal to me (heat added purely for the deal), but I won't be signing up.

The PL reporting seems a bit biased IMO. Individual journalists (or in some cases 2) for seven named clubs, then a pool of five journalists reporting on the other 13 clubs. No thanks. I can get my fix of news about my club from plenty of other sources and form my own balanced opinion from those. (edited)

Can you see it here? My 12 months subscription at £1 a month ends in September. You can either count how many months you've paid so far here or what you next month's bill will be here.

I managed to re-subscribe with my existing email.

Cancel your current subscription (mine was due tomorrow) then click the link for the deal. The page for this offer will load but then will attempt to reload you back to the homepage (just stop the page from loading once the offer page has loaded). Enter your card details and confirm, and your new 24 months subscription will be applied to your existing account!
