It depends on your faith in the more traditional news outlets and the value you put on journalism. The general standards of writing in the mainstream media has dipped immeasurably over the past 15 years, but that doesn't mean that there aren't a bunch of hungry, talented journalists out there.
It's happened because of the strains put on writers and what they produce by the huge conglomerates that own the vast majority of the media in the UK (and beyond). That means - as I'm sure you're only too aware - that journalism has become less about investigation and getting to the heart of a story and more about being the first to tweet or react, so you are leading the race for likes and retweets.
If you want to invest in good writers and good writing, and also show newcomers that there is a pathway to a standard of journalism that's a world away from the sporting version of Love Island, then £1 a month really is nothing.
I get at least 10 articles a month from the Atlantic which I a) really, really enjoy and b) take a minimum of 10 mins reading time each. 100 minutes is roughly the length of a movie and given a trip to the flicks is at least £10 these days, then a quid represents incredible value to me. It won't be for everyone, but that's ok.
