Product Description
Scott Kelby, author of The Digital Photography Book, volume 1 (the worlds best-selling digital photography book of all time), is back with a follow-up to his volume 2 smash best seller, with an entirely new book that picks up right where he left off. Its even more of that Ah haso thats how they do it, straight-to-the-point, skip-the-techno-jargon stuff you can really use today to make your shots even better.

This book truly has a brilliant premise, and heres how Scott describes it: If you and I were out on a shoot and you asked me, Hey Scott, I want the light for this portrait to look really soft and flattering. How far back should I put this softbox? I wouldnt give you a lecture about lighting ratios, or flash modifiers. In real life, Id just turn to you and say, Move it in as close to your subject as you possibly can, without it actually showing up in the shot. Well, thats what this book is all about: you and I out shooting where I answer questions, give you advice, and share the secrets Ive learned, just like I would with a friendwithout all the technical explanations and techie photo speak.

Each page covers a single concept on how to make your photography better. Every time you turn the page, youll learn another pro setting, tool, or trick to transform your work from snapshots into gallery prints. If youre tired of taking shots that look okay, and if youre tired of looking in photography magazines and thinking, Why dont my shots look like that? then this is the book for you.

This isnt a book of theoryfull of confusing jargon and detailed concepts. This is a book on which button to push, which setting to use, and when to use it. With nearly 200 more of the most closely guarded photographic tricks of the trade, this book gets you shooting dramatically better-looking, sharper, more colorful, more professional-looking photos every time.

I was given this for Christmas. If you have either or both of vols 1 or 2, you don't really need this. There is not that much in there that is very new.

Is it worth getting if I don't have either of the other volumes?

I was just about to ask that same question:

Is it better to get this, or look for vol.1&2?

Pete

I have his book on Photoshop. It's brilliant as he is very clear speaking. I've just ordered it.

I myself already have 1 and 2 and they were pretty good. Hoping #3 can give me some more tips, will have to wait and see. The reviews look pretty good

So does this volume have pretty much all what is in the first 2 with a little new stuff added?

There are different tips, but very similar. For me, volume 1 was good, quite innovative for a photography tips book, and the one I got most out of. It is a bit like condensing the half a dozen useful pages from each issue of a photography magazine over a couple of years into one book. Volume 2 (got same times as vol 1) was less useful, but still had some decent tips. Vol 3 is just too similar to the others for me, the tips are not really that new, and anyone that has a brain can work them out from what they know from the earlier books. If you are only going to buy one of them, I would definitely go for Vol 1. You can jump straight into Vol 3 (or Vol 2 for that matter) as there is no progression in skill (they are really tips, not skills that build across volumes), so you don't need to have read the earleir ones before going to Vol 3. However, I think Vol 1 has a better range of tips.

Thanks for the info NobbyB

Thanks ordered Vol 1

Vol. 1 on Amazon is £6.98 while Vol. 2 is over £10

Volume 1 ordered

I've got volume 1 - thought it was great. Which way next?
Volume 2 - or 3? Is there enough in them to get both, or would vol 3 suffice - or don't I need it at all... ??

Thanks for the comment on the Photoshop book - doing a course on that shortly so might have to buy that. I like the way he writes.

If you go to the Amazon page you can view the index online to see the contents,I have vol 1 and I think this is very different....the sections on flash interest me as just got new flashgun (thanks to another hotukdeal) and want to learn and experiment.....thanks for the post op.....

Is this aimed at DSLR photography or more at compacts please?

I love this book, if you want to know how to get brilliant results but don't want to spend your life learning all the finer points of photography then this is the book for you. His humour is refreshing as well, geeky yet making fun of the jargon.
If you like knowing your F stops, depth of field, ISO film numbers and shutter speeds ( and I think you can tell I don't) then you need a more conventional photography book.

Mainly DSLR. There are a few tips you could get for a non-slr user, but the majority are not

Can anyone recommend any good books for this purpose?

i've got all 3 and to be honest, i thought 2 & 3 looked exactly the same.

Vol 2 is in greater extent dedicated to studio&flash photography. It's still a very good book.

Ooo this looks interesting! I've seen the 3 volumes before but not really sure I wanted all 3, or which would be best for my current limited needs. Vol1 sounds the most promising - thanks for the personal review Nobby! Rep added!

Which is better to get then version 1 or 3 please? Thanks
