QUOTIING 'IPHONE'
Calls cost up to 2p/min + 6p set up fee from a BT landline
(Doesn't state how much it costs from Mobiles)

Following the initial payment of £1 quarterly payments will be £30 thereafter on Direct Debit unless communicated otherwise in writing by the Economist Newspaper Limited.

This includes Iphone/Ipad access, online, audio etc.. as well as a paper copy

Can't see this offer anywhere, but best offer that exists now is 12 issues for £12.

2 Questions spring to mind: If anyone could answer them, that'd be great:

I'm guessing you should cancel straight away but do you have to cancel in writing, rather than cancel DD with your bank?

It says its for new customers only -> Does this count if you've changed address?

Found this number on saynoto0870 and can confirm that it works:

It has been there for the last of couple of years! Economist advertises this deal to students, during freshers week, campus events, halls, etc... I signed up to it 2 years back. Didn't know much about how direct debits work back then, so didn't cancel. They took payment of the next cycle. Requested them to cancel subscribtion afterwards, but they were very slow and took them almost a month to reply to emails, and cancel the subscription.
FT's student subscription offer on the other hand is very good.

Bu...u...ut... The Economist is a far better paper than the FT.

You probably need to start with something a bit more basic than The Economist then!

It's a very regular deal this, but good because the economist is expensive! I'm following thier tweets, which all have links to interesting articles (@theeconomist, predicatably) unlike the FT they don't charge for their online stuff

The economist is a quality publication

Subscribed
Should remember to cancel, as is £30 afterward for the following next 3 month

Beware if you cancel as I did, they will pester you for months by telephone to go back!!

Done this. They said I can just cancel the direct debit at the end of 3 months or just call them.

You can call them on 0114 220 2404 which saves on the premium rate number

The UK is totally shagged with no hope of recovery. Do you really need the Economist to tell you that?

Rubbish. It's been tough but things are picking up. The public sector will still get slaughtered and the press will have a field day over that, but manufacturing has already turned a corner and finished 2010 very nicely. Expect slow but steady growth through 2011 at around 2%. Longer term the UK looks like a good place to be.

lol, it doesn't hold a candle to the FT

I remember emailing them, replied to me the next day saying that it's fine and I should cancel DD on my end with the bank just to be sure which I did.

Bigsky - you talk with such confidence - perhaps you should be Georgie O's right hand man !!!

Funny then that the media has been full of the government having to have a plan B as economists are very very wary that plan A is capable of achieving what they want.

There are also audits going on to see if the financial might that China appears to be is real - there are those with real doubts - so lets hope thats not true as I hear China currently is keeping the US out of the bankruptcy courts !!!

We could always keep devaluing the £ so that the might that is our manufacturing industry can pull the rest of us out of this pit - sorry I forgot most of our manufacturing has gone to eastern europe and asia and the ones that remain are controlled by foreign owners who can stop production here whenever they feel like moving to Romania !!!

still confident ? you must know something everyone else doesn't !!

bobbybuilder

still confident ?

Yes.

QED

Bigsky - what manufacturing? I work in Pharma - all manufacturing has gone to Asia. Most of R&D is starting to follow. Pfizer Sandwich (the most respected R&D facility in Europe) in Kent is closing. The Government fiddle while Rome burns and talk about selling our forests. Does this sound like a recovery to you? You must be on some seriously strong anti-depressants. Can I have some?

i tried this number, and while i could get through, it said 'press 1 for the economist', and when i pressed 1 nothing happened. i tried a few times, but gave up and just used the 0845 number.

anyway, the iphone quote worked, and in response to OP's first question, you can cancel by telephone, and with DD you don't need to cancel anything with your bank.
