Arguably the scariest motion picture ever made, William Friedkin's THE EXORCIST was unleashed on an unsuspecting American public in 1973. The film quickly became a nationwide sensation, leading to religious boycotts, fainting, and a huge box office return. Oscar nominee Linda Blair beat out hundreds of other child actors to land the role of Regan MacNeil, a 12-year-old who is possessed by the devil. After exhausting all other practical options, Regan's mother, Chris (Ellen Burstyn), acknowledges the supernatural nature of her daughter's condition and recruits Father Damien Karras (Jason Miller) to stage an exorcism. Aided by the mysterious Jesuit exorcist Father Merrin (Max von Sydow), Father Damien must confront not only the supernatural phenomena in front of him, but also his own inadequate faith and displaced guilt over his mother's recent death. Friedkin brings William Peter Blatty's Oscar-winning script to shocking life by establishing a realistic, everyday tone before allowing the terror to creep in. The performances of Burstyn and Miller further help to ground the supernatural events. Like THE GODFATHER before it and JAWS shortly after, the breakout success of THE EXORCIST helped to transform Hollywood into the blockbuster behemoth of American culture.

35 years on and still nothing can even come close to the shear disturbing and terrifying original Exorcist movie. I dare you to watch it on your own with the lights out !

I'm a closet Exorcist III fan. It's got a creepy menace to it.

I was horrified at Exorcist II, but only by how bad it was!

I thought neither version of Exorcist: The Beginning was worth watching.

I know I'll get loads of flack but the 1st was the most over-hyped film of all time (except maybe for the simpsons!).

Hype built it up in many people's views but just killed it for me stone dead. I recall going to see it and was touching cloth at the prospect, but had I not heard the hype I may well have gone in there and enjoyed - if that's the right word - a real scare. Hot for those who want it... Not for me though

i remember my mum telling me that when she went to see it at the pictures that one lady vomited during the showing and that several others were stretchered out of the showing due to fainting and collapsing.

Hot deal by the way

The Exorcist - best horror film of all time
The Exorcist 2 - meh! a confusing mess (but has the excellent richard burton in it)
The Exorcist 3 - nothing to do with the original, confusing and too long (very scary bit with a nurse and some huge bladed shears though!)
Exorcist The Beginning (both versions) - boooooring

I prefer the "version you've never seen" with the spider walk footage restored.

The Omen Collection> The Exorcist collection.

Still a good deal though.

The Omen Collection> The Exorcist collection.Still a good deal though.

agreed - the omen = 3rd best horror movie of all time!

Wont deliver to mainland.

Love Exorcist III (apart from the silly tagged on end, but that was studio interference apparently). Great deal - worth it for parts 1 and 3 and for staring in disbelief at 2 and the Schrader prequel.
