Just a heads up as The Gym is opening up quite a few new gyms around the UK this year. The gyms are open 24 hours, and seem good value to me. They do not have saunas / pools etc but have good gym equipment, showers etc

In North West London both North Harrow and Wembley should be open in a few weeks, if you sign up now you only pay £10.99 a month the first year. I believe the normal price is £16.99 a month, and they claim to guarantee that you will never pay more than this in the years to come.

Just to clarify, this is only for one gym you join. However you can upgrade to use all The Gym gyms in UK for £19.99 a month, which isn't bad at all (this is the normal price).

Yes there is also a £20 joining fee, title amended.

There is no contract, can leave or "freeze" membership at any time.

To 'freeze' will cost you £5 a month, but it means you won't need to pay the joining fee again when you 'un-freeze' (assuming you don't then cancel of course)

I see there are new ones opening very soon in Glasgow, Newcastle an Peterborough, so probably the same offer.

Later in the year there are approximately another 20 gyms opening at various sites around the country, and again will probably have the same deals.

(Click on " find a gym" for list of gyms)

Joining fee of 20 quid just so people know.

done this for one of their others....well worth it

Get around the £20 joining fee by bribing a student friend for their NUS card number.
Been a member of this chain for a few months now.

Great deal - wish they had one of thesee in Cannock as it seems fitness first have pretty much got the monopoly. There are a few others but they are quite poor I believe.

Wish the Ilford one would open sooner.. The fitness first in there is horrible..
but I bet when this opens all the idiots from there will just move here..

joining is £20 and like Pure gym there will be a charge to leave (about £20), as long as you use it regularly its great, the open access is really good, no excuses!!

Been a member for a year now. Difficult to fault if all you want is a well stocked gym and no classes etc. Also, note that you can freeze your membership and reduce it to £5 per month rather than cancelling and having to re-join at a later date.

Shock

Fitness first are shocking. I was with them on and of for about 4 years, as they were next to work. (Shepherds Bush). Half the treadmills, etc, didn't seem to work much of the time, the hot water often stopped working, sauna would be out of service for weeks,, and they charged £45 a month for it.

One day I went in and there was a sign saying "exciting news"... Which turned out that they were upgrading the price to platinum (so approx £55), yet made no changes to the gym.

Fitness First are a Terrible company to deal with, lots of stories of folk having money squeezed out of them, overcharges etc.

The Gym looks good for the price.

I've been a memeber of The Gym for over a year & very happy with the place. Paid a lot more for less with a council gym & that was after corporate discount.

I didn't realise The Gym now charged a joining fee on pre-opening offer. When I joined last year there was no fee.

If you have (or know someone with) an NUS Extra card there's no joining fee.

To clarify there is normally no joining fee if you sign up before the date a particular gym branch opens (at £10.99) (exception seems to be north harrow)? There is a £20 joining fee if the branch is already open (waived if you have an NUS Extra card.)

Prefer pure gym, there are/were codes going aboutto avoid the joining fee, plus for me personally there are more pure gyms around my area than the gym

Was excited about this and called them with couple of questions.
1, they don't have an opening date. End of march sometime.
2, they don't know if any car parking is available there (harrow)

Bit off putting really.

There is no leaving fee - provided you cancel your membership. If you do not follow the correct process and simply cancel your DD then they might try to recover the cost of a failed DD from you.

I can confirm there is another one opening in Newcastle, opening April.

HOT as this deal is promoting health although there is none in my area -_- a gym under £15 a month is a bargain indeed.

Do they have free weight equipment? The one near me doesn't clarify on it's website whether it does or not, all it says is "dumbbells up to 35KG". I want to know whether they have proper barbell equipment, squat racks etc.

The good thing about the expansion of The Gym is that it seems to be forcing other gyms to lower their prices. The Fitness First near me has gone down to £29.95 a month with no commitment or contract.

My first payment has just gone through, (for North Harrow, which opens in a few weeks) and The first payment is £30.99 (just checked my bank account). I thought I had read somewhere that I wouldn't be charged £20, but when I applied it was clear I would be. I am happy enough with that.

^^ Look at some of the gallery pics for weights

The Manchester city centre one has a smith machine and one squat rack (which 95% of the time is being used for benching). Its got about 8-10 adjustable benches and a decent enough selection of dumbells. However, going any time other than early morning/late night is a nightmare as its so busy there, and no one seems to want to put their weights back. But, for £15 a month it isn't too bad!

I should have clarified that I meant proper adjustable free weight equipment - Olympic bars and big plates, not just the fixed barbells that only go up to a set weight.

a great deal for a great economy gym concept, I have used the brighton gym, hot from me

I stand corrected, the free joining fee doesn't seem to apply at all of their gyms

Friend was a member at Waterloo one and says he left because they have a poor range of free weights. But that's his preference. Brilliant if you want to keep fit. Maybe not so much if you want to do weight training. Could just be the Waterloo branch though. Have heat anyway!

There is no charge for leaving.

Definitely would recommend them. I joined one of their first gyms in Guildford a few years ago. Great value for money. Once word gets around it will get busy during weekday evenings.

Info on the lifetime guarantee of price...(from faq's)

We provide a lifetime guarantee that your membership will stay the same as it was when you joined regardless of any subsequent membership price increases at your Gym. We'll protect your membership and honour the offer that we first gave you.

If you joined at the pre-sale introductory rate of £10.99, your membership will remain at this price for 12 months before going up to your Gym's monthly rate at the time when you joined.

Also it mentions the NuS card waiving of £20 joining fee.

Yeah, that's why I signed up quickly. Many of the ones already open have a waiting list now.

By the way it's just by North Harrow tube station, or 5 minutes on a bus from Harrow On the Hill, so good transport links.

(Wembley one next to Wembley Central station)

No contract either, can cancel, or freeze any time

These are going to put a lot of gyms outs of business, I'm surprised councils allowed it. Good though that keeping healthy is no longer restricted to those with high disposable incomes.

Looks like a great gym lots of equipment only concern is free weight dumbells only go upto 30kgs as stated on the website

Why cant they have one of these gyms near me

Been a member at The Gym Group in Tottenham since it opened, been really happy there. Used to go to the GLL Gym's which are abysmal in comparison. It can get a bit busy at times, but since it's 24 hours I really just go at my own leisure. Hot deal.

Love this gym. The one in Leicester has clear glass windows with the machines all facing a fairly busy road for about 20 meters. Great way to make time pass whilst stuck in rush hour traffic watching overweight people struggling on the exercise machines!

no joining fee with NUS card!

Also, freezing the membership costs money....

The sign outside of the Newcastle one (opening soon) says no sign up fee. It is in Heaton (Another former Fitness First btw)
