"The Hitchhiker's Guide To the Galaxy" BBC Radio Player

"DON'T PANIC" this is the ORIGINAL BBC Radio Series from 1978-80. Available now on the bbc Radio Player. May be an unabridged version but I'm unsure about this. If this is posted in the wrong place please feel free to delete.

Great series, and IIRC they insisted on the cast of the radio series when the filmed the TV show.

... plans for the bypass were in a dark basement, in a locked toilet, behind a door marked "beware of the leopard"...

just don't, please, mention the dreadful Americanised 'movie' ...

I wasn't even going to go there... brain the size of a planet, and they make me call the lift (or something like that)

Good find, though this is only the first series. Anyone seen the complete series for sale on CD?

ebay of course

To those who ask where were the Out campaign's plans for Brexit?

“the plans were on display…”
“On display? I eventually had to go down to the cellar to find them.”
“That’s the display department.”
“With a flashlight.”
“Ah, well, the lights had probably gone.”
“So had the stairs.”
“But look, you found the plans, didn’t you?”
“Yes,” said Arthur, “yes I did. They were on display in the bottom of a locked filing cabinet stuck in a disused lavatory with a sign on the door saying ‘Beware of the Leopard.”

I got mine from the Book People a couple of years ago (all 5 phases) - but the company that manufactured the box set went into administration. Not sure who got the rights after that.

I love everything Hitchhikers (even the movie) and I have listened to the first two audio series several times so definitely hot for me. I encourage EVERYONE to listen to this rare gem and check out the rest of Douglas Adams' work.

I got those a few years ago, thanks to HUKD, they were a £10 for the complete

an excellent listen so heat added for introducing others

I hate the BBC but this takes me back to my childhood when I used to look forward to every episode one of the few good things the Bloated Broadcasting Corporation has done

Thanks op and R37R0

I've got all of the radio shows on CD and DVD, and the TV show on DVD, and the first 5 books. I tried the sixth, but it's just not the same.

I agree - the sixth just doesn't cut it. Couldn't get more than about 50 pages in. Tried twice. Gave up. It's not for me.

I don't have the radio or TV series, but what I do have - somewhere - is the 45rpm single of the theme tune with Disaster Area's "Only the end of the world again" on the other side, in the bright yellow and red "rubber duck" sleeve. Strangely enough, when I got it - NEW - on its release God knows how many years ago, I had a very close look.

Inscribed with a very sharp fine instrument, just in the middle of the record on the blank bit of vinyl after the track has ended, is "duckless adams"........

I'm hoping it is worth an incredible amount of money - although they might all have had this scribbled on for all I know.

Good find but this may be the more recent live theatrical version and not the original radio series with Peter Jones as "The Book".

An atrocious version of Marvin. The yanks, incredibly think it's a better version which sort of says it all about their taste (or lack of) Alan Rickman did his best but was far far FAR worse than the memorable original and wonderful Stephen Moore

The last series written by some Irish writer were appalling too. Forgettable
If they were going to write another series having it done by Red Dwarf writers Grant and Naylor may have worked better

I used to have the original series on vinyl..... nothing better than waiting for the theme tune to burst onto the speaker after a 'slightly scratchy' silence when you put the needle down....

The last book was written by Colfer - the 4th and 5th phases are based on the Douglas Adams material.

If you got a library card ,your local library will probably be a member of overdrive where you can download the mp3 versions for free. My library also has on cd if you wish to check yours . I orgionally had this on cassette but wore it out.

Yes, that's it. Bought it 6 years ago (£34.40 apparently). About double that now on Amazon.

I've also seen it in The Works, although not recently.
