Welcome to the HotUKDeals VPN Megathread!

With privacy laws on the internet changing on a weekly basis, more and more users; especially in the UK, are turning to VPN services to protect their privacy and freedoms on the world wide web, as well as some added bonuses we'll talk about more in this thread.

So, what is a VPN?

Wikipedia defines a VPN as - 'A virtual private network also known as a VPN is a private network that extends across a public network or internet. It enables users to send and receive data across shared or public networks as if their computing devices were directly connected to the private network'

Why should I use one?

There's a whole host of reasons you may wish to use a VPN, including but not limited to;

  • Accessing Business Networks from any place in the world

With more and more people working remotely, it's important for businesses to protect their information as well as their employees when working remotely, a VPN ensures that data is safe and secure no matter where you are working.

  • Hide your Browsing Data from ISP and local Users

A lot of us take our privacy for granted, and only understand its importance when under threat. All ISPs will log the data of your IP address. When you use a VPN, they can only see the connection to your VPN, and will ensure no-one spies on your internet history. Even more importantly, it secures your connection when using a Public WiFi access point, protecting your from prying eyes on the network.

  • To access Geographically restricted content

'Content not available in your country or region' NO MORE! A VPN service will allow you to connect to multiple locations, to help you bypass any of these soft restrictions.

  • To Bypass Internet Censorship

This one is particularly important for UK users, with threats of restrictive internet access being debated within government this year, starting with 'Adult' content websites, this could set a dangerous precedent for censorship on the internet.

This all sounds great, but are there any downsides?

Yes. Firstly, there's always going to be an additional cost as you avail of one of these services. Free providers do exist, but the quality and reliability is questionable. Secondly, should the VPN be congested, this can have a negative affect on speed.

The no logging is kind of the crucial part for many, who don't want their internet use tracked or sold to outside companies. If you're using one of those for privacy you'd probably be better off just using your normal ISP.
I'll stick with NordVPN. Been with them a few weeks and the service has been great. Online chat queries answered in minutes, download speeds etc excellent. Worth paying that little extra for peace of mind!

Thanks for this but I’ve never heard of them

Have you a link to that?
Very fast reply to my email but unfortunately they do not support my router or smart TV.
I find express VPN to be the best and I’ve tried a few. Not sure I’d risk a company with no feedback but that’s just my opinion. If you go for it and it works out ok then you’ve found yourself a bargain ! :-)
Depending on why you need a VPN - you might want to find out if they keep logs and how they respond to requests for user activity

"Not as cheap" , agreed. "Not as good" though, might or might not be correct. Only time will tell.
When I see deals that cheap, the first question that pops to mind is... Is that sustainable? Running a VPN company does cost money and quality bandwidth as well.
They're based in the UK (thats bad) and they log... it's a no from me.

I think my routers claims of having VPN support is somewhat misleading, would have preferred an all in one solution so have been looking at a few Asus models..they mentioned support only for android Tv's...my Samsung has Tizen.

    No? Been to China?
They do keep logs and it is timestamped+bandwidth
SSL Certificate is issued by Cloudflare
    Lack advanced DNS leak protection
UK Based so jurisdiction of 14eyes + eoti
P2P is blocked unless you use a certain server

If you're wanting to switch netflix country though? You should be fine

very new to VPNs, do you guys thinks its worth buying long term plans, what if the company wraps up in few months. thanks
    tcotpatpwtcot1 h, 22 m ago

    Don't think this is possible.

Of course it is. This over simplified it but Your client has to connect to the VPN server, your client sends data to the VPN server and the VPN server then sends your data on as if it originates from itself so disguising where the data came from. Any replies go back to the VPN server and then are directed in to your device.

If your ISP blocks or drops traffic from your device to the VPN server then that’s it it will stop working.

Its then then a cat and mouse game as the VPN host will try to change the servers IP range and the ISP try and discover and block the new ranges.

The VPN in the cheaper deal keeps logs.

Spend the extra money and get one that doesn't.

I've been with PIA for years. It's literally the only direct debit I have every year that I just let roll on.
    malky391 h, 38 m ago

What kind of router do you need to buy for it to be vpn compatible?

    ASUS
Avira Anti-Virus ( the free version, I have ben using it for years ) has a built in VPN, can't say what it is like because I use a paid VPN. Having said that if the VPN is anywhere near as good as the anti-virus it might be worth looking at.
It's all been said already but this is worthless unless you just want a VPN to get switch countries for Netflix etc.... and the "No Logging" selling point is inaccurate.

Detailed comparison here thatoneprivacysite.net/vpn…rt/ - do your research

Tor shouldn’t be used for torrenting, nor should it be used to access any personal accounts (logging into websites). Any person can set up their network as an endpoint and capture all of the information that flows through it. Websites that utilise SSL should be OK, but why risk it?

Tor is made for general anonymous browsing, whistle blowing, accessing the dark web etc.
