With privacy laws on the internet changing on a weekly basis, more and more users; especially in the UK, are turning to VPN services to protect their privacy and freedoms on the world wide web, as well as some added bonuses we'll talk about more in this thread.

So, what is a VPN?

Wikipedia defines a VPN as - 'A virtual private network also known as a VPN is a private network that extends across a public network or internet. It enables users to send and receive data across shared or public networks as if their computing devices were directly connected to the private network'

Why should I use one?

There's a whole host of reasons you may wish to use a VPN, including but not limited to;

  • Accessing Business Networks from any place in the world

With more and more people working remotely, it's important for businesses to protect their information as well as their employees when working remotely, a VPN ensures that data is safe and secure no matter where you are working.

  • Hide your Browsing Data from ISP and local Users

A lot of us take our privacy for granted, and only understand its importance when under threat. All ISPs will log the data of your IP address. When you use a VPN, they can only see the connection to your VPN, and will ensure no-one spies on your internet history. Even more importantly, it secures your connection when using a Public WiFi access point, protecting your from prying eyes on the network.

  • To access Geographically restricted content

'Content not available in your country or region' NO MORE! A VPN service will allow you to connect to multiple locations, to help you bypass any of these soft restrictions.

  • To Bypass Internet Censorship

This one is particularly important for UK users, with threats of restrictive internet access being debated within government this year, starting with 'Adult' content websites, this could set a dangerous precedent for censorship on the internet.

This all sounds great, but are there any downsides?

Yes. Firstly, there's always going to be an additional cost as you avail of one of these services. Free providers do exist, but the quality and reliability is questionable. Secondly, should the VPN be congested, this can have a negative affect on speed.

Wouldn't invest much, the isp's are going to be blocking vpns

Don't think this is possible.
I'll stick with NordVPN. Been with them a few weeks and the service has been great. Online chat queries answered in minutes, download speeds etc excellent. Worth paying that little extra for peace of mind!
I find express VPN to be the best and I’ve tried a few. Not sure I’d risk a company with no feedback but that’s just my opinion. If you go for it and it works out ok then you’ve found yourself a bargain ! :-)

No. It's a bit far. I usually stick to Majorca

I use IPVanish, apparently they don't log your history, they say they have a zero-logs policy, the speeds are generally ok too but I find it could be quicker at times

There have been some ups and down mainly due to dns problems and the failure of connections to alternative sites (not do with them) I think there now is an IOS version. Don't quite understand why it hasn't been mentioned here. They seem to be quite big. Any problems are dealt with by email almost immediately. 33 servers in most countries. No restriction on speed and none in practice though I've only got a 5Mb connectionPs Re logs and logging: when push comes to shove and a person is asked to reveal their company's logs or go to prison, the choice is obvious whever the company's policy is.

I think that's why you choose a company outside of UK US etc because they don't keep logs so there are no logs to reveal. I'm not an expert I could be wrong but I think that's the jist of it

When a computer is connected to a network, a correspondence table relates the computer's IP address to its physical address on the network.

This is what they taught me whilst doing the ccna, the Mac is assigned to every network card wether it's in a pc or smart tv. You can change MAC addresses though, I used to do it on old NTL modems a long time ago but you are right.

Yeah i heard the negative reviews about pure , but for £9 for a year , thought worth a punt and (so far) been really impressed .

Wirth PIA , I had been losing 20-30% of my broadband speed
With Pure , it is more like 15-20% and so far really impressed.

Like i said only had it for a month , but so far really impressed.
Hey any help appreciated, I am with Plusnet, I have a new smart LG TV, I was going to use IPTV can you set up a VPN on TVs, ?

I’ve tired out PIA for a month and now the month is up, whilst it’s been good I’ve been on the lookout for competition. PIA allows me to portforword and VNC into my PC’s and to portforward plex. Anybody know any other VPN’s that will allow this too? Had a look but so far my search has been unfruitful.

Proceed with caution with ANY VPN. There’s never any way of checking all the anonymity claims, or the claims not to keep logs, and in reality you have no way of knowing who you’re dealing with or what they’re going to do with your data.

If it’s a particularly cheap VPN, chances are they’re making their money by selling your data.

If you’re just using the VPN for legitimate purposes, as I’m sure most people will be, maybe no big deal. If not, watch out. Quite possibly some of these VPNs may also prove to be government agencies. In fact I’d be amazed if they weren’t.

I was more commenting on the poor customer reviews, speeds, and wasting money on a unfit for purpose purchase.

But you are correct.

Certain VPN's have however had no logs claims tested in the real world.

While others have been found to be doing the opposite of what they claimed (Pure VPN's name again comes up)

Which VPN works to get American netflix (I live in the UK) on Xbox one? Or is that not possible?
There's so many companies to choose from, especially with you having to pay an annual charge up front.

This over simplified it but Your client has to connect to the VPN server, your client sends data to the VPN server and the VPN server then sends your data on as if it originates from itself so disguising where the data came from. Any replies go back to the VPN server and then are directed in to your device. If your ISP blocks or drops traffic from your device to the VPN server then that’s it it will stop working. Its then then a cat and mouse game as the VPN host will try to change the servers IP range and the ISP try and discover and block the new ranges.

My head just fried with that reply
Which VPN is better to use when you just want to set it up within your bitorrent client but leave the rest of your PC running without it (so I can use things like iplayer via the browser). I tried MacSentry but couldn't find the settings required to add to bittorrent client?

There are no VPN apps that work with Netflix on the Xbox i am aware of.

Fear not it can be done though. You will either need to have a router that can support a VPN connection and a VPN service that unblocks netflix.

restoreprivacy.com/vpn…er/

restoreprivacy.com/vpn-router-setup/

restoreprivacy.com/best-vpn-for-netflix/

Or you can go through the rather complicated process of setting a DNS media stream with Express VPN.

expressvpn.com/support/vpn-setup/stream-to-xbox-one-with-dns/amp/

Be aware this is just alterning your DNS server for the Xbox. Your Xbox traffic will not be encypted and you will be using your ISP's IP address.

I use CyberGhost and have done for a few years, good service when I needed it and now I use it on my phone it’s great
When you connect to a vpn in some countries it drops the internet connection suggesting that it blocks connections to vpns. Ofuscated servers is one way round this but sometimes these don't work either. Anyone got any suggestions? Particularly interested in input for using obfuscated nordvpn servers that work in mid east countries

Thanks
Have tried many of the above and am presently using Nord which is not as good as they make out. Pure VPN leaks like a sieve and has had several dreadful reviews. Others have given their clients details to law enforcement agencies. From what I can recall Edward Snowden was outed by his VPN supplier. Not that we are all budding spies but it does make you wonder.

A HUKD contributor suggested Speedify VPN which offers a basic free service (also paid for service if u want) and I found that to be very good.

What does everyone think of Tunnel Bear?

I’m on the Rigs WiFi and when I have the VPN activated the connection drops sometimes, when I switch the Tunnel Bear off the WiFi connection returns, anyone know why this happens?

Free VPN+ for me at the moment. Only gives me USA but it's perfect for me and allows me access to movie apps like vudu. Tubi and movies anywhere. First foray into VPNs but it seems to be doing the job and it's free
