Now available at 500 Tesco stores across the UK, it is the hottest ever chilli pepper to be sold in a British supermarket.

Grown in Bedfordshire, the Komodo Dragon measures up to an eye-watering 1.4m Scoville units – the official measure of chilli potency. In comparison, the lively jalapeño pepper used in many pizza toppings measures a mere 3,500 Scovilles, while the very hot Scotch Bonnet is rated as up to 350,000 Scovilles.

Tesco chilli pepper buyer, Eleanor Mansell, said: “In recent years we’ve had the fearsome Dorset Naga, the searing Bhut Jolokia and the mouth-numbing Trinidad Scorpion. But they all pale in comparison with the UK’s latest commercially grown chilli pepper – the mighty Komodo Dragon – which puts the others in the shade.”

Awesome. Their little bags of "very hot" mixed chillies were getting a bit mild for me. I'll have a look tonight. Thanks man

If they are referring to the Trinidad mourega Scorpion, then that definately doesn't pale in comparison, it was actually the worlds hottest at around 2 million on the scoville until recently this year when it was beaten by the carolina reaper which hits something like 2.2 million scoville,

1.4million on the Scoville scale? Pfffffffffffffftttttttttttttttttt!

Hi! Never had a Moruga scorpion but have had a couple bhut jolokias (ghost peppers!)
According to wikipedia the moruga holds a heat of 1.2 millions scovilles this is 1.4

I am hoping so!

Hot! (obviously)

If anyone is looking for something a little hotter/different, chilliesontheweb.co.uk/ has a good selection and service.

Did they think of doing a combo deal with a roll of Anusol?

Heat added (which takes it to 1,400,003 scoville units by my reckoning).

I consider the Trinidad Moruga scorpion to still be the hottest chilli around. The Carolina reaper is not a stable cultivar,-it has to be grown under careful conditions unlike Moruga. I think it's just americans wanting to be the best at everything- so they cheat.. Hot (literally) deal here!!!

Not sure where it rates then, mourega average is 1.2 but goes up to 2 million, don't know what the hottest recorded for this is, maybe it's 1.4 that would probs give it a much lower average though, all I know is mourega was number 1 till the carina reaper came along.

Either way, I will be getting me some of these!

It is just my opinion. Moruga is a region of Trinidad where the Moruga scorpion grows wild. Carolina reaper grows only inside carefully controlled greenhouse conditions. It has not been able to sustain growth outside as far as I know. It's like comparing a man to mamma's boy still living at home in his mom's basement playing Call of Duty all day online.

Thanks for putting on such a great deal. I cannot live without Thai Birds Eye chilli and Scotch Bonnet. All of my food is hot- I would not eat meals without them. I cannot go to restaurants with workmates because all the foods are so bland, and I also dont eat at lunchtime because shop food has no chilli in it. All in all, my life has been ruined by chilli. Great deal!!!

Good Luck finding any in their 500 stores where it's being sold!

To be honest - I have never heard of this chilli pepper before. I have several varieties growing this season in my greenhouse including Bhut Jolokia (normal, white and chocolate), 7-Pot (normal and burgundy) and the Trinidad Scorpion T-Butch. I also have the more mild varieties like Cayenne, Jalapeno, Scotch Bonnet and Apache.

I understand there aint much between the Moruga and T-Butch Scorpion chillies. All my 'super hots' are still Green at the moment - but have tried a few 7-Pots, and they are punchy!! Naga's I love - such a sweet taste - not ready to be picked yet though

1.4 million scoville units are for breakfast or supper only! Voted hot (even if they are a bit on the mild side)

No this is a new chilli to me too! there arent even any video reviews on youtube which is odd as i would have expected to see at least one. I'm sure it will be flooded now with a group of lads at the pub eating them... Would like an actual review from someone who knows what they are talking about though as they arent available in my area!

Lol. So what is it you have for lunch then? chilli extract?

I anticipate these are possibly grown for Tesco by Edible Ornamentals, here located in Chawston Beds / Huntingdonshire border just off the A1
(the link is to a few plants they do, he site isn't the greatest, but a visit will show a lot of plants & products)

Or alternately fresh chili's in quantity... >HERE
Not that particular one, but these are 2 growers i'm aware of in the area (Beds) who grow...

This Guy (salvatore) is likely the culprit & source....
>Here< But I don't think you can visit unlike the nearby chilli farm listed first.

the 1st one, does do very good |& well recognised tours & tasting tours for individuals & groups.. so if chili's are your thing or you wish to grow them its a good source of product & information.

Love chillies but there is a point when too much can ruin a meal.

I don't understand how anyone would enjoy these unless they use very tiny amounts of it.

I'd rather use 3-4 birds eye chillies in a curry than 1g of this stuff.

Wasn't this chili used in one of the dishes in the series 'Hot and dangerous' with omid djalili? The name seems to ring a bell. I see a few people now have managed to finish off 'the widower' curry which includes 20 naga's.

Trailer - You know it's gonna be hot when the chef wears a gas mask X)

Get the toilet roll in the freezer ready...

might be that komodo is the commercial name for it. Might be something like a ghost etc. or possibly a hybrid

If you want to know your nearest stockist ask Tesco on facebook or twitter, you just need to give them your postcode.
