The Lion King theatre tickets - from £20 per person - Lyceum Theatre London - Jan / Feb dates

Disney’s The Lion King is the much-loved musical stage adaptation of the hugely successful animated film.

Disney’s award-winning musical is now in its 23rd triumphant year at London’s Lyceum Theatre, having entertained over 15 million theatregoers and become the West End’s sixth longest-running musical of all time.

Set against the majesty of the Serengeti, the awe-inspiring musical is directed by Julie Taymor, who also designed the Olivier Award-winning costumes that transform the stage and auditorium of the Lyceum Theatre into the African plains. Occupied by lions, giraffes, birds, zebras, hyenas and even a stampede of wildebeest, the show is perhaps most famous for its Circle Of Life opening number, which provides one of the most spectacular sights and atmospheres in the West End.

When the young lion prince Simba is born, his evil uncle Scar is pushed back to second in line to the throne. Unimpressed with his future prospects, Scar plots to kill both Simba and his father, Mufasa, becoming king in the process. Young Simba survives the heinous plot but is led to believe that his father died because of him. Devastated, he flees the kingdom and soon finds a carefree life. But without a real king, the pride soon falls on hard times and a hero is needed to bring back prosperity.

Released in 1994, The Lion King quickly became one of Disney’s most popular modern movies. At the 1995 Oscars it won the awards for Best Music: Original Score for Hans Zimmer’s score and Best Music: Original Song for Elton John and Tim Rice’s Can You Feel The Love Tonight. Two of the film’s other songs – Circle Of Life and Hakuna Matata – were also nominated. Both score and songs feature in the stage musical adaptation, along with some new material.

The musical adaptation debuted at the Orpheum Theatre in Minneapolis, Minnesota, going on to win six Tony Awards when it opened on Broadway at the New Amsterdam Theatre in 1997. The show transferred to the Lyceum Theatre in October 1999, where it was nominated for eight Olivier Awards, and it participated at the Royal Variety Performance in 1999 and 2008 in the presence of the Royal Family.

A spectacular stage production in which astounding spectacle, uplifting heart and beloved music and lyrics combine, Disney’s The Lion King is not to be missed.

Wanted to see this for years, finally got to go last week (after a deal on here!) and sadly wasn’t overawed. The costumes were great, so was the music and dancing - don’t know why it just didn’t come together for me
I’m usually quite satisfied to be at the back to be able to go for cheaper but maybe for this show I would recommend being nearer the stage.

I personally much preferred ‘The Lion, the witch and the wardrobe’ and ‘Wicked’ and also found ‘Only Fools and Horses’ much more entertaining. Perhaps just my personal taste, in that case. 🤷🏼‍♀️

It is indeed. The stage show has taken in more than 9 BILLION dollars in earnings since inception, principally across the West End and Broadway, but also across other global venues.

    forbes.com/sit…er/

Julie Taymor, its creator, grew up in Indonesia and was heavily influenced by the masks used in indigenous culture, which inspired her creation of the incredible repertoire of characters in the show. This is her pep talk to the cast of the Broadway show ahead of the first rehearsal after the Pandemic shutdown. You can see how emotionally invested she is in this musical. Tshidi Manye's rendition of the 'Circle of Life' is incredible in this video - she has played Rafiki for over 20 years.

Incredible price for these tickets OP, good find. I've seen it a number of times but may go again

For those who've been, is sitting up in the Grand Circle (£20) ok or would you recommend paying more for the Royal Circle (£30) or the stalls (£50)?

Stalls I would say...you are closer to the action and get a better feel for the show...ypu almost feels part of it when the animals come down the aisles on the 2 or 3 occasions.

Have a look on the likes of JustPark etc where people rent out their spaces. We almost always use these when driving to central London.

When you see the money they put into the production, you will see they aren't a rip off...

If you are going to this with children I'd recommend the stalls only. Not much rake in the seating but it's much more immersive particularly when the characters walk up/down the aisles

As a 40 y/o theatre-hating male, I have unashamedly watched this production at least five times over the last 15+ years (at the Lyceum), and loved it every time.

The way they get around stage limitations for scenes like 'the stampede' is so creative. I love it. Very special.

You're also then slap bang in Covent Garden which is an amazing place to get pretty much any dinner you fancy.

I would recommend stalls though if you can. It's undoubtedly a more personal experience imo.

Some really good shows, would also recommend wicked and Matilda which are also part of the promo. Lion King is amazing, but get closer seats if you can! Shame they stopped Avenue Q that was quite the show! (edited)

We live three hours away and would happily stay a night over a weekend for this, but weekday jaunts to London theatres when you are schoolchildren/teachers just aren’t possible. I have no idea how average families afford to see these shows at ‘normal’ weekend prices :-(

Even if they did, you’d just be complaining that it was impossible to get those tickets. It may not be pleasant, but any other alternative to pricing is even worse.

Moreover, this is hardly an industry awash with money. Just like with holidays/etc, the cheaper prices off peak (getting a few more bums on seats) mean prices don’t have to be as much on peak.

We all do the same in our own lives. If you sell stuff do you not price it based on demand? If you work a Night Shift/Xmas do you say “np I don’t want to be paid more”?
