Unavailable for over 15 years, The Lord of the Rings has become a cult classic opening a door to a magical world with its fantastic creatures and spellbinding magic. This ambitious animated version of J.R.R. Tolkien's fantasy saga was the first time anyone had adapted the epic story for the screen.

Made in 1978, the original 'The Lord Of The Rings' was directed by cutting edge animator Ralph Bakshi using an innovative technique that allowed the animator to paint over live action footage, bringing the book to life with stunning success.

Featuring an exceptional voice cast including William Squire as Gandalf the Grey, Christopher Guard as the Hobbit Frodo and guardian of the master ring, John Hurt as the heroic Strider, One Foot in the Grave's Annette Crosby as Galadriel and Star Wars' Anthony Daniels as Legolas, the film more than satisfied Tolkien fans, and has attained a cult classic status..

When a dangerous and powerful magic Ring falls into his hands, a little hobbit named Frodo is caught up in a gigantic adventure! Now join him, the mighty Gandalf and a daring band of elves, dwarves and warriors as they set out to defend their enchanted land from the wicked sorcerer who would destroy it. Set in the mystical age of magic, monsters and unlikely heroes on incredible journeys, The Lord of the Rings will cast its spell over you!

Voted cold as it's not the extended versions ;-)

This is about the best version ever made, and a real shame they never got to complete the whole story. Being mostly based on the fellowship book, it only just gets to the main action, before it stops, and leaves the reat of the story untold. Someone please finish this.
Really only for LOTR fans, and wont satisfy anyone who thought the Jackson ones were actually following the book. Or the people who enjoy their FX more than a story.
You also need to know the book to understand this film as it is quite dark and sometimes difficult to see what is happening.
great price none the less.

That's a DVD, I never knew it was available on that medium! Wow... Hot hot hot for any fan! Let me go order mine... Thanks!

I agree about this being very special though unfortunately not many people think so.

Am i going mad I could swear I saw a preview for the unfinished part featuring a giant spider once on tv?

I must read the books sometime.

Had this for a while, it is a must see for fans of the books. I must admit to being disappointed in the Jackson films, pandering to the Hollywood 'we must have a love interest' critics and missing out huge parts of the books that were integral to the Tolkien story. But I went to the cinema to see them and got the extended DVD versions, so I guess I cant complain too much. Do not put too much on this version ever being finished, the rights to the books were sold on and they cited not having enough money as the main reason why it didn't happen at the time. So, what will Jackson & co do to the Hobbit?!?

Del Torro is a great director, so it's in safe hands. It's a very short book though, and getting two whole feature films out of it may be a bit of a stretch !

In 1992 Channel 4 hosted a number of programs and documentaries celebrating the life and times of J R R Tolkien for what would have been his Centinery year. As part of the weekend they showed the animation of Lord of the Rings, and included a brief synopsis detailing the reason to why the film was never completed and how the Lord of the Rings story ended. With the overview they re-used a number of the original cartoon stills, but whether they included any new unseen footage i'm unsure. Although I have a copy of this Channel 4 release somewhere.

I think Gandalf is trying to over-compensate for something looking at the size of his sword on the cover...

Saw this at the cinema when it was released (and I must have been really young!). Fondly remembered, I remember the long wait for the second part that never came.

Until it was released on DVD in2001, the THORN EMI VHS of 'Lord of the RIngs' used to fetch upwards of £100!

Cheers. Another trip down memory lane. One advantage over the Jackson films is that the hobbits look like hobbits in wide shots not suspiciously like children!

Hot love this version

Oh wow, as a Tolkien obsessive I've always wanted a copy of this
Excellent deal.

Thanks...have been a fan since reading the book back in the 70's (and I've still got it!)...never fancied/watched the films...always thought it an impossible task to reproduce the book properly in the cinema but an animated version might do it...look forward to watching the DVD's! lol

Yeh Del torro has made a few decent films,.

Disagree it could be a stretch to get 2 films out of the hobbit. There are plenty of adventures through the book that they can go in to details opposed to the LOTR films that had to thin it all out.

Also the two films will not just be about the Hobbit but will include Aragorn, Legolas and a few others from LOTR. They are using some of Tolkiens notes to add parts that were not in the Hobbit.

Voted hot for this DVD, excellent version and pretty close to the book considering!

Nope, on my old (and lost :'() VHS copy they had obviously done some of it as it had a sort of potted ending with Shelob in it.

Whilst not in the same league as this film, a version of the RotK was made and is considered by many a sequel of sorts. Its not great, but worth checking out for those who haven't yet seen it.
