An interesting film for any religious persuasion, an historical epic with fine acting.
This handsomely-mounted historical epic concerns the birth of the Islamic faith and the story of the prophet Mohammed -- who, in accordance with the tenants of Islam, is never seen or heard (any physical depiction of the prophet is considered a heinous sin within the faith). In Mecca in the 7th century, Mohammed is visited by a vision of the Angel Gabriel, who urges him to lead the people of Mecca to cast aside the 300 idols of Kaaba and instead worship the one true God. Speaking out against the corrupt political and military leaders who rule Mecca, Mohammed and his followers struggle to worship God as they see fit, which eventually leads them into exile in Medina. However, one day God gives Mohammed a message to return to Mecca and take up arms against their oppressors -- while recruiting as many followers as they can along the way. With the help of his uncle, a brave warrior named Hamza (Anthony Quinn), Mohammed and his followers return to Mecca to liberate the city in the name of God. The Message (originally screened in the U.S. as Mohammed, Messenger of God) proved to be highly controversial during its production and initial release. Unfounded rumors had it that Mohammed would not only be depicted in the film, but that he was to be played by Charlton Heston or Peter O'Toole. This resulted in angry protests by Muslim extremists, until director Moustapha Akkad hired a staff of respected Islamic clerics as technical advisors. The advisors butted heads with Akkad, and they quit the production, which led the Moroccan government to withdraw their permission to film in their country. In time, Akkad ended up shooting on location in Libya under the sponsorship of Muammar Qaddafi, which presented a whole new set of political and practical problems for the filmmakers. Finally, when the film was scheduled to premier in the U.S., another Muslim extremist group staged a siege against the Washington D.C. chapter of the B'nai B'rith under the mistaken belief that Anthony Quinn played Mohammed in the film, threatening to blow up the building and its inhabitants unless the film's opening was cancelled. The standoff was resolved without explosion or injuries, though the film's American box office prospects never recovered from the unfortunate controversy. The Message was shot in two versions, one in English and one in Arabic (entitled Al-Ris-Alah), with different actors taking over some of the roles due to language requirements. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Surely Anthony Quinn's acting isn't that bad that you'd want to blow a building up over it?
Jeez, I think Jim Carrey is pretty bad but I'm not going to set fire to the Odeon in protest over "Yes Man 2"

You cant say that , its racist :whistling:

Brilliant film

Allahu Akbar!!

While I congratulate amibees for finding this gem of a bargain, I do not feel the intro does justice to the finished product .

A must watch film? I would say so, YES. But not only because it has been directed well and so on but more importantly because, whether we like it or not, living in multi-cultural Britain, I feel it is of utmost importance that we learn more about each others background. And sadly the media will not tell it how it really is. The only way to overcome ignorance is to learn it from the source.

Living in a world where Islam and Muslims (not the same thing!) feature in our headlines, somewhere in the world, almost every day, this is a MUST WATCH because based on historical records, this film brings to life the story of Prophet Muhammad and what his true values were (you're in for a surprise unless you're more learnered in theology then the average Brit ).

It presents an opportunity for learning for the inquisitive non-Muslim but no less is it a source of guidance to the so-called Muslim that either preaches, practises or even sympathises with any extremist ideology.

Add to your collection and enjoy.

Tempted, is this funnier than Team America world police?

The sooner we are all without religion, the better.

But if you think all religions are merely ways to control people, but tolerate these people and respect their volition then you needn't really watch it.

Religion poisons pretty much everything.

I do see where the school of though comes from, to perceive all (or some) religions as merely a tool to control or brainwash people. Also, I can understand why people believe that the world would be a better place without religion. As for me, I believe at the heart of all the time-tested great faiths of the world there was instrumental guidance for Mankind and that Mankind benefited from it. I believe that if we separate the original teachings of all the founders of these great faiths from the practices of many of their modern day so-called followers, we find the key problems. Today, selfish politically motivated people have all too often become the illegitimate custodians of these great faiths putting the masses off the core teachings and potential guidance contained within the examples and teachings of these great faiths.

I do recommend that people of no faith too learn about the people of faiths so that at least our interactions, judgements and opinions are founded on knowledge rather then ignorance.

And of course I respect you to hold a different opinion and if you chose not to better your understanding of the faiths that surround us.

Peace to all.

It might seem that way if you look at either short term or smaller picture... But in a long run you will need it...

It is like saying I can move faster in the desert without carrying any water but you will need water eventually...

But I also understand why people think like you, it is purely due to those who misinterpret and abuse religion...

very good movie...and you don't have to be muslim to watch it

A very well done film, recommended to all

Not so
in actuality its materialism - the belief system installed into the world today that is the problem
its also warped the religions in the world from what is truth

people are running towards endless troubles - towards evil - science is about modelling the material world and now all you here is peoples egos
90% of matter for all that isnt even known

only spirituality is the answer to problems of today we have all lost our way and the honour granted to all human beings.

this is a decent enough film but hard viewing at times and also misses out a lot off the spirituality part of the whole story.

we all have a connection to the heavens above - and the enemy of mankind and their minions have a vested interest in keeping us occupied and stifled by our worldly life so that we never look up at think that we are here only temporarily - our true being belong up there

so lets look up from this world from time to time and use our own minds - not just take whats been spoon fed to us in this so called modern era...

It's like a jungle sometimes it makes me wonder how i keep from going under
It's like a jungle sometimes it makes me wonder how i keep from going under

Broken glass everywhere
People pissing on the stairs, you know they just don't care
I can't take the smell, I can't take the noise
Got no money to move out, I guess I got no choice
Rats in the front room, roaches in the back
Junkie's in the alley with a baseball bat
I tried to get away, but I couldn't get far
Cause the man with the tow-truck repossessed my car

I Hope so I really love that song.... :-D
