A funny take on the language, have always enjoyed Bill Bryson's books and this one is no different. Kindle edition happens to be only 99p, well worth the price in my view.

Description
With dazzling wit and astonishing insight, Bill Bryson—the acclaimed author of The Lost Continent—brilliantly explores the remarkable history, eccentricities, resilience and sheer fun of the English language. From the first descent of the larynx into the throat (why you can talk but your dog can't), to the fine lost art of swearing, Bryson tells the fascinating, often uproarious story of an inadequate, second-rate tongue of peasants that developed into one of the world's largest growth industries

Hope it helps someone.

I read this a few years back and met a girl in a bar and I typed out "Isle of view" on my phone and got her to read it....I said I love you too.... She's now married to me and still falls for this trick 😃

(The line was a quote from the book, for those who haven't read it)

Bill Bryson is great, and this is an excellent price. Think most of his books are on Audible too if people prefer to listen! Heat added
For me, there were some very interesting facts in this book, but overall I found it tedious and I couldn’t wait to finish it. I much prefer his travel books.

Likewise. Starts strong and the first couple of chapters really interesting. Then really dry. I gave up too.
This is such an interesting read

Excellent, thanks OP
I love things like this, and Bill Bryson too, so hopefully I won't regret splashing out 99p on it!
Bill Bryson is a rock star he should be Prime Minister. ALL his books are a knock out read.
