The new app, which is compatible with all iOS7 devices and Android mobiles and most tablets running 4.0 (ICS) and above, will remain free to download and use for all readers. Readers can also choose to upgrade to a premium version of the app (£2.49 a month) in order to access daily crosswords and hand-picked articles from the Guardian archive, as well receive as an ad-free experience.

If you bothered to get your facts straight and if you could read the sub heading saying 'in-app purchases' funnily enough you would know that this means purchases made within the app! This is for both premium tiers of the iPhone and tablet app 1-4 is the iPhone upgrade and 5 and 6 is the tablet upgrade. You don't get charged for downloading the app or using the app unless you go into settings and purchase a subscription! Think twice before you start accusing others of misleading!!

keeps crashing on my note 3.

hopefully teething problems.

I haven't tried it yet but as Guardian stated in their blog post, it seems it would be free to download and use for all readers but if you need daily crosswords and hand-picked articles, you should upgrade your freemium subscription to premium version which is £2.49 a month.

Not a bad deal anyway.

Isn't this an updated app, rather than a new one? I seem to have this already - or am I missing something here?

This is a major update to the user interface, but it's always been free. I don't see why this is a 'deal'?

it's not a deal. cold

Good that it's now free, but preferred the old version. Navigation wise this is a pain. Pretty annoying they got rid of the favourite section

It's always been free,

such apps are always free its the Daily content you need to pay for!

Cold!

You're referring to 'placeholder' apps like many magazines etc where the app is free but the content is not. But this isn't like that.

You get all the daily news content for free (with minor ad support).

The sub gets you the daily crossword, archive access and Guardian book extracts.

Good deal if you're getting daily content from one of the major newspapers for free but awful paper.

can I get that on a kindle fire hdx , anybody? sorry clueless when it comes to operating systems etc

I think you'll find that its readers think it's rather a good paper. Do you read the Mail or the Express, perhaps?

It's one of the better papers. The ever increasing political apathy and unhealthy foment with celebrity amongst the nation's population, has had an adverse effect on its fortunes. This has steadily impacted The Guardian's investigative journalistic edge since the 80's. Yet, by and large, it still towers above the Red-Tops and has a much better social conscience than the other broadsheets.

The Independent has become something of a mishmash; editorially it appears to be metamorphosing into a crossbreed of Mail, Mirror, Standard and Guardian. Quite an uncomfortable read. I just wish Lebedev would sell it to someone less indifferent.

thanks for this.its free....i dont know why folk dont check this

On tablets, the new live apps will sit alongside the existing Guardian and Observer Daily Edition apps, which will continue to give readers a newspaper experience on iPad, Android and Kindle Fire devices.

The daily mail is free for iphone, not sure on ipad. You can personalise what topics you prefer to read, ie sports, world news, motoring etc. Updates really fast in the morning, and you can read offline ie on tube once updated daily.

The only problem with the Mail is that it's an evil, nasty paper full of poisonous bile - and of course that you have to face the derision of normal people if you're seen reading it.

...and 'normal' people read The Guardian ? You're a rather condescending chap.

Even if it was free I wouldn't subject myself or my family to the loonie leftie influences of this paper.
