Remember what a wild frontier the early days of home gaming were? Manufacturers releasing new consoles at a breakneck pace; developers creating games that kept us up all night, then going bankrupt the next day; and what self-respecting kid didn't beg their parents for an Atari or a Nintendo? This explosion of computers, consoles, and games was genuinely unlike anything the tech world has seen before or since.
This thoroughly researched and geeky trip down memory lane pulls together the most entertaining stories from this dynamic era, and brings you the classic tech that should never be forgotten.

Book Description

This book celebrates the most exciting period in the history of technology - the arrival of the home computer and home gaming console. YouTube's most successful purveyor of computer nostalgia brings those stories to print.

About the Author

With well over 100,000 followers on YouTube as "The Nostalgia Nerd", Leigh is well known to his loyal fans for his in-depth videos about the software, hardware, games, toys, programs and magazines of the 70s, 80s and 90s. He has no shame admitting his addition to retro tech (indeed it would be hard to hide).

Great little book. Same price at The Works with free c&c.
Why do I feel the need to buy something from Hukd everyday knowing I don’t need it haha. Heat added
If you like this then I also highly recommend watching dan wood on YouTube as he covers a lot of Amiga and retro consoles too and also subscribe to he's podcast called the retro hour. 60 min show. First half is all about talking about the latest retro news and the 2nd half is all about talking to a special guest like David plesence and dave haines from Commodore Amiga, nostalgia nerd, etc.... fantastic podcast to listen too on journey home from work with a can or 2 of beer.

You most likely know about this bloke but if not check him out amazon.co.uk/Boo…hen - His youtube channel is excellent, as are his books.

Also watch a show called gamecenter CX, it's basically Japanese Top Gear but for retro games., Just watch subbed and not the horrid american dub, it's terrible.

This is ok but not much detail. Flick through it once and you're done.

Thanks for posting, free same day delivery on prime too!
Got this and we love it
I saw this in The Works at the weekend (not sure but might have been £6 as they don't have same prices in all branches) however to be honest quickly flicking through it just made me feel kinda old really... nice quality book though, colour pictures, midi-sized, almost an inch thick IIRC.

Got it for Christmas last year and read it a few days, definitely something to dip in and out of. Two or three pages on each machine, a good overview and some interesting details plus the best / worst software & games. Well written and researched but a few printing errors (double paragraphs, obviously missing bits) lets it down.
I'm not sure about "Manufacturers releasing new consoles at a breakneck pace" but I do still have a boxed Vectrex system that I bought from Woolies in '83ish.
From my outlook the real "game" changer was the Amiga.
Ordered one for my son. Great find and price. Cheers
I'm not sure if it's a bug but when I click 'Look Inside' I can view the entire book
good little book this, i picked it up from The Works I think for a similar price, nice flick through
Great book, ideal for secret Santa or as a sticking filler.
This guy is quite good on YouTube as well.

Yeah. I'd say the "releasing at breakneck speed" happened more with 8 bit home computers. Everyone remembers Spectrum/C64/Amstrad (I had the Amstrad). But there were tons of others, which pretty much all failed at varying speeds.

Remember Aquarius, Dragon, the MSX range, Jupiter Ace, Oric 1, Acorn Electron ..... etc etc ....

The joys of the zx81 and adjusting the volume on a tape recorder to load the program. Wild times, which often resulted in disappointment

Oh yes. And finding a little screwdriver to adjust the head alignment too. And then, if it did finally load, it was garbage half the time.

Kids these days don't know they're born ....

If any of you guys live near bury or Leeds then you can go play games life gorf (I did on friday) and hundreds of other games retro and modern at the arcadeclubs there. I was like a pig in excrement

Yep, he has some really good stuff although his recent content seems a little lacking in enthusiasm, maybe he's getting burnt out/losing interest or there's only so much you can say about retro gaming/computing. This video had me in tears of laughter:

Thank you for posting, we have added your thread to the Highlights page
Delivery 1-3 weeks? I ordered a game recently off Amazon (it was actually in stock) and it was never dispatched, they just kept giving me endless expected arrival dates until I got tired of waiting and cancelled the order.

Don't forget the BBC micro, everyone remembers those. Good machines. I've still got a few working together with an Amiga A1200
