Double bill of Indonesian martial arts action films. In 'The Raid' (2011), a SWAT team becomes trapped inside an apartment block ruled by a ruthless gangster and his army of killers, thugs and drug-dealers. The largely rookie squad is led by an over-cautious Lieutenant into the building, where it is quickly outsmarted and out-gunned. Their objective is to bring to justice the drugs baron who resides on the building's top floor, but this proves far easier said than done.

In 'The Raid 2' (2014), still smarting from his last assignment, Jakarta cop Rama (Iko Uwais) is tasked with going undercover and infiltrating the criminal underworld to find out who's really pulling the strings. However, with his family in danger from those seeking retribution for the pain Rama inflicted on their fellow gang members, it'll be a race against time to bring the entire criminal empire down single-handedly while covering up his true identity...

Two of the best pure action movies ever made. If you recognize the story in Raid 1, that's because it's based on the same story outline as Dredd. As stated above Dredd is also a great action film. Especially in 3d, or failing that 4k.

You don't know what you're talking about unfortunately. Raid 2 has an amazing story, acting and action. You most likely couldn't follow the story!
^ plot of raid 3
The reason the Raid 2 doesn't seem as good is because the first film was so jaw droppingly awesome. The Raid 2 could be better (or is depending on your view) in every way but you are not going to get that same high level 'holy sh*t is this for real that's gotta hurt wow wow wow this film is insane' feeling if you have already seen the first Raid.

The Raid 1 is awesome as is Dredd, but Dredd was in production before The Raid, it just came out after due to the implemetation of the 3D aspect, which today is the best ive experienced in a film.

Still haven't seen The Raid 2 even though I have it.

Feel like it’s the start of a beautiful friendship
The Raid 2 has some arguably better scenes just has way too much talking in between.
The director has a show starting soon on sky think it's called Gangs of London and the trailer looks good.

Looks really decent - let's hope it delivers

Thinking Dredd came later, and the plot is remarkably similar..

Indonesian movies, so the chances are the 'Moozlems' are both the bad guys and the good guys lol

The plot is similar, but that goes for every genre film from buddy cop movies to possession movies. I enjoyed both - Raid for its gritty-ness and Dredd for its colourful over the top slow motion shots!
Anyone not too impressed by Raid 2, try watching it again. I watched it on release having loved the first film. I think high expectations left me disappointed, but I watched it again recently and it was much better than I remembered.
I liked R1. R2 just felt a bit bloated and also needlessly violent.

Great price though...

Welsh director I think!
They are on netflix atm
Also see Headshot. Same main actor, full of action. Night Comes for Us too, several raid actors in it and awesome fights. All are on netflix too

@captainjack and @awiew

Without getting personal... I too preferred R1 over R2.

R1 was taut. R2 was bloated.

Both good. But R1 was infinitely better.

Edit: edited the above comment.

Think I will avoid this in case I end up with an opinion on it.
Two of the best action/martial arts movies ever!

Rewatched both recently back to back then again listening to the excellent audio commentaries by director Gareth Evans. Two of the best and most detailed audio commentaries I’ve ever listened to. Clearly Gareth Evans is a huge martial arts fan and a very passionate movie maker. Highly recommended for any fans of the movie.

The Region B Blu-ray (Europe, Africa, Middle East, Australia, and New Zealand) includes an exclusive second audio commentary by Gareth Evans, not found on the Region A Blu-ray.

Two words. Hammer Girl.

The Raid 2 wins for her alone

R2 doesn't win.

But Hammer Girl was indeed brutal.
Those who loved RAID movies should check out GANGS OF LONDON on SKY TV coming soon. It's made by director of Raid movies.

Well, she tipped the scales for me

I love them both but The Raid felt a little 'on the rails', The Raid 2 aspired to greater things. It may not have pulled it off but you have to appreciate the ambition. The characters were also a little more fleshed out.

Edit: Hang on, you said you preferred The Raid 2 earlier

No... I preferred R1.

But yeah, Hammer Girl was brutal.

Edit: I need to edit that.

R1 was better than R2.

I think overall I prefer Raid 1 but a few scenes in Raid 2 are just outstanding. The hammer girl and baseball bat guy fight scene has to be one of if not the best fight scenes ever. it just feels that everyone is so close to death with every move, I have never felt such a level of intensity watching well pretty much anything actually.
Definitely rate R1 higher than R2. But they're fantastic!
Dredd's screenplay was written by Alex Garland and its script was leaked online before Evans started writing The Raid.
The Raid was quickly written, filmed and released before Dredd finished its lengthy post production.
The Raid's a good film, but Dredd should be getting all the credit.

Dredd has a pretty good soundtrack.
I watched these back to back. 2 really incredible films. The first reminds me of Dredd but a bit better. The second felt like a godfather type film with lots of action.

I have the steelbooks but if I didn't I would get these.

Credit? Ok. Dredd is excellent. But the Raid is still a little better.

Totally agree. Needlessly violent and too stylistic. Who uses a baseball bat AND ball as a weapon of choice? 2 hammers...really?? Raid 1 was more believable, gritty, emotional, and a better story all round.
Thank you for posting. We have added ths to the highlights section.
Raid 1, better plot....Raid 2....better fight scenes. Both unbelievable
