The Royal Holticultural Society Searchable Database of Plants Free @ RHS online

Tremendous searchable database of of plants, annuals perennials, bulbs, shrubs, tree, herbs, climbers etc.

Find you plant by name, garden aspect, soil type, colour, size, season interest, hardiness, foliage, fragrance etc.

It also gives you names, maps and links to suppliers for that special plant you can't find in the garden centre.

The RHS Encyclopedia of Plants retails at £28 in Waterstones. The RHS What Plant Where is £20. So if you intend to buy these books you could be saving at least £48 by using the online search.

The RHS database which is free to search is not the same thing as the books mentioned above. You do not 'save £48' with the so-called 'freebie'.

Excellent idea. Allows you to basically reverse engineer your garden by inputting your soil type/garden type/style etc and then recommends what plants to buy and their suppliers. Heat added.

Am I being obtuse or are these free books? I have looked on the site which is indeed very helpful however I need a little clarity as your listing sounds as if these are books?!? Lol

An encyclopaedia doesn't necessarily have to be a book does it.....?

Brilliant resource - thanks so much for posting this

You're not saving anything. The OP's link is to the RHS plant finder database, not a digital version of the two books named. The database has been around for many many years. It's only a freebie in the same terms that any other educational website with a searchable database is a freebie.

Cold for deception.

It does if the OP states the prices of what these are in Waterstones ie a bookstore?

Decent resource, but I tend to agree that the comparison with the books available for purchase wasn't advisable

Point taken. Have amended the description. Sorry to have confused people.

But I will argue that money can be saved by using the online search instead of buying the two RHS books.

It cannot be downloaded but it's still an encyclopaedia of plants although an online one.

As it's searchable and you can cross reference with ease, it's actually much more useful, quicker and easier to use than actual books or ebooks. And it's Free!

Thank you PendoBoy. I was excited to find this free resource. I find looking for info in my old Rhs encyclopedia exhausting (must be the small characters). This online one is much easier and quicker to use, and I assume always up to date.

You haven't removed the 'spin' you put on it to get heat. The RHS website is not the books. The books are not the website. They are different resources.

Why are you calling this " deception" and "spin". I'm not selling anything and do not get anything out of this post. It is free to access and doesn't require purchase. So it is not a book, eBook etc, but has the same publisher Rhs and has the same information in it. I will be glad if gardeners like myself get some use out of it. I did not know about this database until this morning and assumed that other people would like to know about It too. Heat in this forum means that people are finding it useful. This is my only reward. Thanks

A lot of bickering around today.
I think this a great freebie find
so thank you to purplemirror &
have some heat.

Because the '£48' saving is fictitious. If you just wanted to give people a heads-up about a useful database, you could have done so without the made-up 'savings'. The books are NOT the same thing as the database and vice versa.

Thanks a lot - just what I needed

Or have I missed something?

Yes.

Voted hot, thank you. This link will be very useful to me and I don't want to buy any more reference books and do see this as the alternative. :).
Btw, ceres may note that most freebies don't get that much heat, so it really would be a waste of time for anyone to post in the freebies section for anything other than goodwill.
