A double-bill of sci-fi horror. In John Carpenter's 'The Thing' (1982), a research team in the Antarctic, led by R.J. MacReady (Kurt Russell), discovers a spaceship buried beneath the ice, and becomes terrorised by the shape-changing monster that is housed within. In the 2011 prequel, the action is set on a research site in Antarctica three days before the action of the original story, the film focusing on the Norwegian camps that were the initial target of the alien invasion. When they discover an alien spacecraft on the site, science graduate Kate Lloyd (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) and experienced researcher Dr Sander Halvorson (Ulrich Thomsen) disagree about how to act. When Dr Halvorson refuses to abandon his research, Kate teams up with tough Vietnam veteran Sam Carter (Joel Edgerton) to pursue the alien intruders by helicopter.

Carpenter's 1982 gets better with every watch, criminally under-appreciated at the time. Remake, weak, as is so often the case. But good deal, have some heat!

It's not a remake, it's a prequel.

Whilst not as good as the original the prequel is still more than watchable.

The 2011 version is NOT a remake. It is set right before the events of the 1982 movie.

I thought the prequel was an excellent film - it’s just unfortunate that the John Carpenter version is a masterpiece that it was never going to be able to live up to!
The Thing is in my top 10 films.. Brilliant..
Likewise.... Heat!
£5 Amazon if can't be bothered to wait to save 0.41p and buy a Mars Bar!
THE THING GOES SKKKRRRRRAAAA
One of my favourite films. Awesome
Stop the press... Heat for the deal OP but I cannot express in words how good the 2017 Arrow edition Bluray is

Got it for Christmas and watched it Boxing Day, awesome! It is down as one of the best releases of last year and it really has to be seen to be believed. I'm sure this release is 'okay' but the Arrow version will DEFINITELY have the edge.

My of my favourite popcorn movies of all time...

I decided to switch things up recently and watch the remake instead of watching the 1982 version for the billionth time. Not a fan of remakes but they did a good job of being faithful to the original and tbh it’s better than most horror films released these days.

Oh, and before some smart arse makes a comment; I know the '82 version is also a remake.

When you get the Arrow version of a film, you've pretty much got the definitive one. I've got a couple of the George Romero zombie films and they are superb, from the quality of the transfer, the extras and the packaging.
John Carpenter's best film. An absolute classic.
Brilliant, absolute classic. Ordered. Thanks OP!
1st one is a classic... seen it a dozen times

Vital bit of info there.
This is my understanding of the timeline

The Thing from another World 1951 (Original)
The Thing 1982 (Remake of 1951 version)
The Thing 2011 (Prequel to 1982 version)

Amazon I think are the cheapest? About £13.30, which I appreciate is nearly three times the price of the OP's deal but in my opinion, Arrow releases are worth every penny... you'll literally be able to "watch" where that extra dollar has been spent

Totally with you there! Arrow are the masters of definitive releases... I'm still waiting for a re-release of their Dawn of the Dead. A mate, with more money than sense, paid about £100 for it after it was deleted! I think there's some legal hold preventing it from Arrow releasing it again

It not a remake it’s a prequel and while nowhere near as good as the main film,it’s watcheable and not too bad for a watch.
infact John Carpenter’s film itself was a remake of classic IT movie.
"You gotta be f*£^@*"% kidding me!" The 1982 version is my favourite film of all time! The prequel isn't as bad as people make it to be, but compared to the original it's awful. All in all, a fantastic deal.

(PS, if you've seen the film, there are some insane theories on the internet regarding the ending, an eye-opener for sure!)

The fact that people are calling it a remake just tells me that they haven't watched it. Maybe pointing out that it's a prequel is a bit of a spoiler (I don't think it's meant to be obvious that it's taking place before John Carpenter's film until the end) but I don't see the harm in mentioning it as several other people already have here - plus it's almost 7 years old now, so the secret's out, and it might just convince a few more people to watch it if they know it's a different film.

But I don't know where the idea that it's a remake came from in the first place because it has a completely different plot and characters - it's just a different group of people facing the same alien. I suppose the fact that it's just called 'The Thing' really doesn't help; it could have done with a subtitle or something. Way to go, marketing department!

So, yes, anyway, obviously the John Carpenter movie is a great movie and well worth having on Blu-Ray, but the 2011 prequel with the stupid name isn't as bad as everyone says it is - because people think it's a remake and that makes them hate it before they're even watched it - so give it a chance. Just think of it as £4.59 for a movie you definitely need on Blu-Ray and then another movie that you might enjoy for free.
The 2011 version suffers from poor CGI effects. The 1982 has organic effects no CGI and the 'spider' scene is terrifying and awesome. It's also funny * spoiler * when they're tied up to the chair and one bloke is The Thing and transforms and they're crapping themselves and trying to get away whilst being tied up, amazing film. Don't watch it if you get scared easily

Don't watch this gif if you don't want to see a * spoiler *

True, but it could have been better and the Blade Runner sequel shows it is possible to get close.

Speaking of which ... Thing and Blade Runner released on the same day in 1982. That would have been some double-header....

Ok, point taken that it’s a prequel, and no I haven’t seen it which is why I missed that it wasn’t a remake. I guess keeping the title identical hasn’t helped
some important info that no-one has pointed out yet
the 2011 film is a prequel not a remake
you're welcome folks

My favorite horror is the John Carpenter version, the prequel had awful ps3 cgi graphics that don't even compete with graphics of console games of these days and it looks like it came straight out of resident evil in game footage and not even good enough to be a cut scene, they should have stuck to using practical effects like the other version.
I would rather never ever watch the prequel again and forget it was ever made which I did before I saw this deal.

Thought the prequel was pretty good, biggest mistake they made was to put a woman in the lead role, should of kept it like the carpenter one with an all male cast.
worth checking out if you can get it is the US TV version of the thing which is absolutely hilarious as the swear words have been dubbed over with ridiculous sayings
The carpenter version is almost perfect. Brilliant opening scene
And I still love his Assault on Precinct 13.
"An intellectual carrot? The mind boggles!".

The premake should have had a different prequelly title.....Rise of....Dawn of....Promethingeus.
I suppose you could always use the 2011 disc as a coaster...
