A double-bill of sci-fi horror. In John Carpenter's 'The Thing' (1982), a research team in the Antarctic, led by R.J. MacReady (Kurt Russell), discovers a spaceship buried beneath the ice, and becomes terrorised by the shape-changing monster that is housed within. In the 2011 prequel, the action is set on a research site in Antarctica three days before the action of the original story, the film focusing on the Norwegian camps that were the initial target of the alien invasion. When they discover an alien spacecraft on the site, science graduate Kate Lloyd (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) and experienced researcher Dr Sander Halvorson (Ulrich Thomsen) disagree about how to act. When Dr Halvorson refuses to abandon his research, Kate teams up with tough Vietnam veteran Sam Carter (Joel Edgerton) to pursue the alien intruders by helicopter.

Loved it - absolute genius!!!
Maybe a bit scary if the kiddywinks saw it tho...
Worth it for the original, the remake is shocking obviously. Heat.

The game was pretty good though, as far as I remember.

Had this conversation on the other thread when this was posted at Zoom a week or so ago, but if you think it's a remake you can't have been paying any attention when you watched it.
I think giving it the same name as the John Carpenter film was a terrible mistake, certainly from a marketing perspective, as it led everyone to think it was a remake, which somewhat biased opinion against it. It's not great but I didn't think it was as bad as most people seem to think.

The game was great, they did a terrific job of replicating the film in video game from (it was a freshly written narrative as well)
Great film!

Best avoided if it comes with the 2011 film tacked on. Just grab the Arrow video blu ray of the original.

Yeah, it was a sequel and it did a really good job of it. I wish it was on Steam but there are probably complicated licensing issues preventing a re-release. I might still have my original PC copy somewhere though...

It's up there with Tron 2.0 and Ghostbusters: The Video Game as great video game sequels to movies.

The one from the new 4K transfer? It's not exactly cheap or easy to find (thanks to Arrow and their limited print runs). Also, I'm disappointed that they did a 4K transfer and didn't actually release it in 4K. Would love a UHD version (not that I have a 4K TV or UHD player yet).
One classic and one not bad at all prequel. I'm happy it exists, no it's not perfect but it's a hell of a lot better than it could have been. Just a shame they didn't have the balls to have an all-male, all-Norwegian cast. In Norwegian, with subtitles. Or do I mean Swedish?

A lot of us in the old IMDB forums called it a pre-make as it seemed to want to be both.
It could have been a really good prequel... If they'd not replaced all these great practical effects with crap CGI as the studio panicked.

If you live in London head to FOPP near Leicester Square/Tottenham Court Road. They’re selling for £15. Picked mine up last week

£15 in most sainsburys for the Arrow release as well. Around £15 most places tbh. The Limited ed version if you can find it goes for a lot more.

This is the cover of the DVD version I have kept a hold of, picked it up for a £1 second hand:

I also have this Blu Ray double pack and I agree with the majority that the prequel is average, the original however is still fantastic.

I used to go in there all the time but don't live anywhere near now. Was looking on eBay and copies keep going for £25. Amazon said £49.99 but OOS - although I've just checked again and it's £13.30 and in stock so maybe I'll go for that!

Alas, finding an Arrow DVD or Blu-Ray in my Sainsburys would be like finding one of those Asda/Tesco game deals.
The prequel should have been a totally foreign language film, Norwegian. Instead they shoe-horned in american actors. A missed opportunity.

The Carpenter film is simply brilliant, still potent on multiple re-watches.

Hey Sweden!

Totally agree about it should have been a foreign language film.
The original is a classic, and the new version was actually very good I thought. Normally remakes are just terrible.

The're Norwegian, Mac
Assault on Precinct 13 is a total midnight gem
