Greatest TV show ever??

Great price!

Includes every episode from mini-series The Wire

One of television's most critically acclaimed programmes, The Wire challenges viewers with a "cop show" unlike anything on air. Universally lauded, The Guardian claimed that 'you either love The Wire or you haven't seen it yet' - now there is no excuse with the release of this complete box-set.

The HBO series addresses the seedy side of Baltimore's finest looking into money, drugs, politics and murder. Told from the point of view of both the police and their targets, the series captures a universe of subterfuge and surveillance, where easy distinctions between good and evil, and crime and punishment, are challenged at every turn.

A study on urban life in one of America's toughest cities, each season of The Wire has focused on a different aspect of Baltimore, starting with the police force and the drug trade, then moving on to City Hall, the education system and concluding with the media. Over the course of five seasons, David Simon has endeavoured to build a city.

It is a groundbreaking, complex and political look at the streets of America, detailed and fiercely intelligent; there is no other show like it on TV.

Special Features:

Season 1: Three episode audio commentaries with writer/creator David Simon, director Clarke Johnson and writer George Pelecano
Season 2: Episode audio commentaries
Season 3: Q&A with David Simons and Creative Team, courtesy of the museum of Television & Radio.

if they are region free and from china, they are bootlegs

I bought the Region free Region 1s from ebay a year or so ago (definitely a legit boxset,) and was disappointed with the picture quality. I put it down to the NTSC encoded DVDs, which have lower resolution than PAL.

I'd love to buy this again in region 2 PAL, but would like to pay less. But go for it, if you don't have it.

True...

Yes.

No.

Utterly boring, so sloooooooooow.
You need subtitles to understand what is being said.
Dreadful.

Don't talk rubbish. The characters are easy to understand.
I am a general fan of HBO series and this is the best by far.
Deep story and characters you feel for.

This is currently on my 'watch when I break my leg' list, should I bump it to my active list?

There's not that many episodes are there?

Boring? Jesus, season one is difficult to get into at first, but it's fantastically entertaining once you are into it. It's slow for a reason - because its meant to be a realistic portrayal of the politics of Baltimore. Take a walk outside and you may be surprised at how slow the world is.

Who needs subtitles to understand what is being said? You? I certainly don't.

The fact is that The Wire is rated very highly among politicians (David Cameron is one who rates in very highly, from the top of my head), academics (Harvard - one of the top universities in the world - teaches its students The Wire as part of a course on social inequality), and it's the second highest rated TV series on IMDB, second only to Planet Earth which makes it the highest rated drama. You're in the extreme minority by a) not liking it, and you're officially on my list of utter morons by b) calling it dreadful.

It's about 13 episodes a season, or roughly 65 hours overall.

It's really impossible to put in words just how fantastic a show it is.

Please educate me, what do you watch that is better than The Wire?
I've struggled to find much, if anything, so enlighten me please.

it's all in the game, yo. all in the game...

don't think i've ever seen a television program as good as this.

I rip and run baby!

Great show. Omar might be the greatest tv character of all time.

Great series.
Check out The Shield if u can

You can't attack people for not liking The Wire. If they don't get it, then they don't get it and that's their loss! The Wire is the greatest drama in the history of television. The acting is perfectly underplayed, the directing is of a supreme quality I've ever seen for TV and the writing & dialogue couldn't have been more spot on or riveting, written by Baltimore detectives & journalists who knew EXACTLY what they were talking about in EVERY scene.

The Wire is the most beautifully-cut diamond of television and I pity those that (a) will never see it, or (b) do see it but take nothing from it.

Can I go now, it's bedtime?

It is a great show, I'm currently watching it on FX, one a week so its slow going but always leaves me wanting another episode!

I agree though with the guy that said it is difficult to understand though, maybe I'm too old for this street slang!!

Completely agree. I don't personally know anyone who doesn't like it but if there are people who don't I'd guess they must not have the patience and want shallow in-your-face thrills from their TV.

I found The Wire utterly captivating and hugely thought provoking. And as you said, the acting is incredible - some of the best I've ever seen. You really believe the characters are real. For that to extend across a cast the size of The Wire's is incredible.

Why isn't this on Blu Ray? Then again, it was 4:3 format for the entire series too? So you get either a large black side border or squashed picture or cropped picture.

Brilliant show though, in a time where the term is used too often.

It's a great show - one of the best ever for me but easy to see why it's not for everyone with all the swearing/violence/slang. It's also hard to follow at the start of a season on account of there being so many characters thrown in front of you.

Season five also felt a little stretched in terms of plausibility.

+1 While still a superb show overall, Season 5 was in danger of jumping the shark. Some of the plot lines involving major characters just didn't ring true in Season 5.

For me, its just slightly behind The Sopranos in the running for best show ever.

Voted hot - good price for a great show.

Amazing show but in defence of those who found it boring it is extremely slow in the beginning. Season 1 and 2 especially take a long time to get going but if you stick with it the payoff is huge. The baltimore accent is strong and i too struggled to understand a lot of characters when they spoke (mainly the gang members) and it seems to be quite a common problem.

I agree with you but whoever ascribed good taste or judgement to politicians? And Cameron....

Omar comin'

Yo tell the yung-un we need a re-up

We used to make s**t in this country, build s**t; now we just put our hand in the next guy's pocket.

Tempted to buy this but not sure I can pry my house mate away from her diet of Strictly Come Dancing / I'm A Celebrity / Don't Tell The Bride and all that inane rubbish long enough to watch a whole episode in peace. I've only seen Series 1, but that was stunning television, very affecting. Voted hot, great price.
