Review:

When this epic series was first broadcast in 1973 it redefined the gold standard for television documentary; it remains the benchmark by which all factual programming must judge itself. Originally shown as 26 one-hour programmes, The World at War set out to tell the story of the Second World War through the testimony of key participants. The result is a unique and unrepeatable event, since many of the eyewitnesses captured on film did not have long left to live. Each hour-long programme is carefully structured to focus on a key theme or campaign, from the rise of Nazi Germany to Hitler's downfall and the onset of the Cold War. There are no academic "talking heads" here to spell out an official version of history; the narration, delivered with wonderful gravitas by Sir Laurence Olivier, is kept to a minimum. The show's great coup was to allow the participants to speak for themselves. Painstaking research in the archives of the Imperial War Museum also unearthed a vast quantity of newsreel footage, including on occasion the cameraman's original raw rushes which present an unvarnished and never-before-seen picture of important events. Carl Davis' portentous main title theme and score underlines the grand scale of the enterprise. The original 26 episodes were supplemented three years later by six special programmes (narrated by Eric Porter), bringing the total running-time to a truly epic 32 hours. --Mark Walker

It's £34.98 at Amazon.

Great series though, watched all the Episodes on UKTVHistory a few months back, melancholic but compelling viewing.

HMV has Quidco.

Still not dropping under £30, even though it's a good series, it's such an old release, should be around the £20 mark. Already downloaded the xvid rips from the net, holding out for at least under £25 before buying.

I've just started watching these, im into episode 7 now and its amazing to watch how WW2 unfolded, most of the footage really puts you at the scene of events and leaves you waiting to see the next episode. Made before I was born but classic TV.
Im usually a fan of 24, prison break etc but Im hooked on this, wish History at school was this interesting!

What a nice surprise.

I actually worked on the music for this series, Thames TV way back.

In that case you should be VERY VERY proud. Thank you. I agree with the OP. This series is THE benchmark and I wasn't even born when it was broadcast

Great serious. As a 7 or 8 year old I watched this every Sunday. Would leave my friends and watch it, then return. Gave me a real taste of History. I am now a Secondary teacher of ICT. But I have asked to teach some History and teach 2 lessons a week of it.

Great series! Can't really part with £35 for it but hope it comes down in price.

This has recently been on BBC2 I think, during the day. The few episodes i have seen, including the unfolding of Germany's defeat in the East has been totally mesmerising and compelling. I agree whoever has worked on it should be very proud.

Strangely, I was thinking of where I could buy this to see the whole series. And now I have at least one clue. Thank you for this post.

Congratulations on contributing to a very worthwhile project.

Double-congratulations if you had anything to do with that impressive title / end credits music.

It's still currently being shown on BBC2, at about 2pm (3.35pm in Northern Ireland). It's a great series, well worth watching.

Yeah not sure why they're keeping this price relatively high at £35, I agree it should be around £20 or even £25 at most. I can only assume sales are strong at £35, since HMV had it at £29 for a few weeks.

It is currently on BBC2 although it's half way through now: bbc.co.uk/pro…pq6
