The much criticised widescreen edition unfortunately.
A superb series. One of the best made of all time. I have it on bluray. I've no idea which version it is . Suffice to say that's it's essential. World at War should be on the school curriculum. The second world should never be forgotten. This series tells it as it is. Sadly we live in days of political correctness. In the movie Dunkirk the Germans are called the enemy. Call a spade a spade and stop rewriting history.

What's the better option, interested in this having seen none of it, streaming service even?
Make sure you read the reviews first, many people think the original DVD is better. This one has a "pan & scan" approach which some find off-putting.
I ordered this on Friday. Having read the reviews it may be the widescreen version but it is the improved version in other ways and at this price is half the price of the DVD on Amazon so worth it in my opinion.
I had the DVDs and replaced them with this BluRay set. Some may be worried about the P&S but it's been very carefully done and the upgrade to both the clarity from the original film elements (where they are good enough quality) and the colour gamut (for the non B&W bits obviously) is well worth it.
Good price but this really needed to be left alone in the original 4/3 format than either pan and scan or zoom out to make it 'widescreen'
I wonder if they're clearing their widescreen stock as they'll concentrate on selling the original 4/3 version for just £58

Its an awful approach they took to this, why on earth go to the bother of digitally restoring something and then lop off the top and bottom borders?
Is it really that bad given the price? For people that havent seen it before?
this version is absolutely shocking, completely butchered it. I sold and purchased the far far far superior reissue which is in the original 4:3.

This is the greatest documentary ever made on WWII, and should be watched in its original format.

Even the old VHS are infinitely superior to this complete & utter trash.......the backlash against this when it was released should tell all that is needed to know, it was a shocking release.

The makers were pressurised into remastering the bluray edition back into it's orginal 4:3 format as they'd cropped heads, all kinds of schoolboy errors. I've already been an advocate of presenting in a widescreen format, but this version on sale was utterly FUBAR!

If you're not aware of the original, then yes, it's cheap, but not acceptable for those of us who've seen the original many, many times.
Bought it. I'm not totally passive to Aspect Ratios, but I'm sure I can handle a bit of cropping if it saves me £40.
Daily Mail were doing the full set via redemption offer on DVD a few years ago. They can be had on ebay for ~£10

Can't underestimate the quality of this series.

Don't mention the war!
Was on Netflix for months (the original version), but currently disappeared. I'd assume it will be back at some point.

I don't think that was the point Nolan was making.......even Churchill refers to Germany as the enemy in his WWII memoirs. The enemy was the third Reich not all Germans.

Bet you voted Brexit.

No need to confirm that I’m correct.

The cropped 16:9 version was released by Freemantle (in effect the leftovers of Thames who made the series), the 4:3 version is from Network. I wonder if, along with the rights to release the 4:3 version, Network got a load of old stock of the 16:9 release. Network are archive specialists and treat material with respect so wouldn't have released a cropped version. Now I want them to get the rights to Thunderbirds (all of it, rather than an episode or two as part of a compilation) and release a definitive Blu Ray version of it that isn't either cropped or suffering from some other issue!

When it was released there was a feature on YouTube about the remastering in which they said they'd cropped it because TV companies wouldn't buy HD material that was 4:3. OK, crop it for them if you must, but for the people who are interested enough to buy it on Blu Ray then leave it 4:3!

FYI all, for those who weren't already aware, there is a 4:3, non-cropped, blu-ray version of this series!

They re-released the BR following the backlash:

More expensive, but can also be found cheaper than directly from Network.

Yawn.. well I watched it and enjoyed it. I'm going to watch it again now just to annoy all the aspect ratio purists.

"Aspect ratio purists" - that might be your opinion but personally if I am going to watch HISTORY then I would prefer to see every inch of the recorded footage in the correct ratio. It's historical war footage, it's a complete disgrace that they edited it for modern audiences TVs.

Yawn all you like, you're not seeing the big picture, literally!!
