That’s what made me start comparing them all properly And believe me I s …That’s what made me start comparing them all properly And believe me I spend weeks doing so.I know not one person on here has done that

Okay so we understand that you're an enthusiast, you buy a lot of movies and you like to watch high quality material on high grade devices. Like yourself I'm also an enthusiast, I own a calibrated LG OLED along with a Samsung Q90R Atmos soundbar, and an Oppo 203. I'm also a pixel peeper and like nothing more than watching movies in the highest quality. I've worked in graphic Design for 23 years, where I've used numerous calibrated Eizo monitors, and know a thing or two about resolution, HDR, compression, artifacts, processing and colour. So you can assume I know a little about PQ.

So like yourself I've done a fair bit of comparison before deciding on whether to purchase an Apple 4K TV last year. Are there differences between disc and iTunes releases, sure. The biggest differences being the sound. Apple use the HEVC codec for encoding video UHD movies, thus reducing the storage size by a good 50% whilst being able to maintain a high image quality level. If you look closely at an iTunes still in a dark scene artifacts can be more noticeable than the disk variant.

As you've stated in other posts, disks, at times can be disappointing. I think there was an expectation that when UHD came along every movie was going to blow us away. And while that is true of some, it can't be said for all. Probably the biggest improvement from 1080p Blurays came the implementation of HDR and dynamic metadata, when combined with a great PQ a movie can really stand out.

Ultimately it comes down to weighing up pros and cons. For many reference quality movies are not consistent enough to justify the £15 - 25 outlay for each disk. When you factor in that most people watch movies only 1-3 times each it's hard to justify dropping so much cash on something which doesn't always live up to expectations. That's why iTunes movies are so appealing with their low prices.
Wow this has been a fun read(y)
My take on all this is that I don’t think anyone would argue that physical discs are not better, however for the most part unless you’re doing side by side comparisons then for most people they’d say the picture looks great and without prior knowledge probably wouldn’t even be able to tell if it was a stream or disc that was playing.
To say standard Blu-ray is better than an iTunes 4K stream I’m not so sure that holds up as surely that’s dependant on the film and the transfer used.
Batman Returns most definitely looks far superior via iTunes in 4K than my standard Blu-ray disc does that’s for sure and I don’t even have a HDR set at the moment but can clearly see which is better.
Personally I think some people spend far too much time comparing rather than actually sitting down and enjoying movies these days.

Even if purchased, you don't actually own the movie. I'd recommend holding on to the Blu-rays just in case.

Amazon/Apple? You don't seem very sure. Maybe you could provide a link to this report...

Regardless, I haven't lost a single purchase in over 9 years.

Ah the weekly post that someone read that someone heard that someone posted that someone lost a film. We'd better stop buying 4K Dolby Vision Dolby Atmos movies at £3.99 and go back to UHD disks at £25 then

Heat for effort
Added heat for creating a list rather than separate posts.
Ronin was an instant buy this morning, as I've been slowly trying to replace my Blu-rays when prices drop.

As others have said, heat of course for the the effort and not creating separate posts.

I believe what I read was related to Apple. It was a thread on Reddit. Unfortunately, I am unable to find it again. Also, it was someones account of it so anecdotal with no proof to back up the person's claim.

People below say I'm wrong, so feel free to do whatever you want with your Blu-Rays. They are yours after all.

Wrong, the file remains in your purchase history regardless

Edit
Some studios are naughty and remove and then add the film again to dodge the free 4K, still the original file remains to stream. It’s happened to me on a couple of purchases.

There seems to be a bit of confusion about this. To watch movies on Apple TV the movies are streamed and streaming rights can be revoked by studios. Apple says they will never delete any movies you have downloaded. You can only download in HD to iPhones or iPads. They have never cleared up the grey area of movies you haven’t downloaded. A tweet about a guy losing his movie became viral and that was later cleared up as him moving regions and that was the reason as the movie was not available on his new regions store.

Whatever the case, the deals are so cheap that it’s a no brainier compared to physical. Physical can get damaged so swings and roundabouts

No it isn't, and there are plenty of online comparisons showing the differences as negligible.

Hardly night and day.
"The difference between disk and Apple streaming is night and day"

Why do people post such things?

The lossless audio on disk can't be beaten - if you have a decent speaker setup that is - but streaming Atmos is pretty good.
But 4K video uses the same tech as disk at a lower bit-rate but the difference is negligible and you're saving a lot of cash this way too.

Check out the trailers in Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos for the first few Apple TV+ releases and see for yourself.

Clearer? That's pretty vague.

Would you mind telling me what films you compared? I have compared BTW, and standard HD Blu-ray does not come close to Apple TV 4K in resolution. Then add on HDR or Dolby Vision... sorry, no.

Claiming otherwise is laughable.

I've got news for you. If an Apple TV 4K movie is upscaled, so is the disc version. Many modern films especially come from 2K and 2.8K digital intermediates.
A bleeding steal!
