If you add some Masterplug Cable Clips (552/1601) for 99p, you spend over £100 and get a £10 voucher!

or donate 20p to charity :-D

To make a donation to Leukaemia Research, simply tick the box on the selection slip in-store and 20p will be added to your total.

Surely they'll not be that ^ dumb? Even so, to maximise the vouchers, you could see what the minimum vouchers they do are (e.g. could you have £2 or £5 added to a voucher card) - that way you get to spend the money in the sales at new catalogue times!

If you have no interest in Setanta Sports or TopupTV (there should be a free trial and card inside the box, maybe check at CS Desk before buying?), you should get approx £40-£45 in total by selling these 2 packages on ebay, you are then left with an IME superb freeview recorder with fantastic features (series link, ability to record 2 channels at the same time, time shifting etc etc) for a net £45-ish. Great deal. Voted HOT!

I don't understand why you'd get £40-£45 on ebay.
Isn't it just saving you £10 for the Top-Up TV stuff, and then another £10 for Setanta sports?

I've got one of these boxes and will be flogging the Top Up TV stuff on ebay, but I just don't get why they go for so much money.

I'm in no way trying to justify why the TUTV starter pack goes for so much money on ebay but it just does (it may be because I can see no other way of buying the starter pack individually, without buying the box?). Nice thing about ebay is you can check what prices they have sold for previously. Ours is not to reason why, I suppose.

My figure was based on £30 for the TUTV stuff (this has been attained already, in fact one poster on here got £38.50!!) and £10 for the setanta (half it's RRP). Not unreasonable?

The starter pack retails for about £15 but you do get a lot of buyers on ebay who pay silly money for things. The free trial card hardly ever sells for £30+.

Can anyone confirm if the latest firmware shuts down the HDD when not in use? the 17w power consumption figure on standby is a bit of a let down. (and very un-green)

AFAIK, that firmware is 'on its way' and it's only speculation that this is what it will do, although Thomson DO seem keen to iron out this box's little foibles and have done already in the recent past (I suppose under pressure from TUTV) so I wouldn't be surprised if it happens.

Where? I've never found anywhere selling it (apart from ebay sellers) without the attached Freeview box.

Edit: All fairly academic now as John Lewis have them back in stock. No free Setanta card with it but if that doesn't bother you it can be had for £75 delivered to your door, with free 2 year warranty.

I was being a little green earlier - the way to do this offer is:

Buy £100 gift vouchers, which I assume will net you a £100 gift card plus a £10 promo voucher.

Buy the box plus the cheapest item you can find with your £10 promo voucher & the balance off your swipe card - netting you another £10 promo voucher plus the change from £10 for the cheapest item on the gift card.

Net result, £100 for £100 box (worth £75), near £20 worth of gift vouchers, the TUTV starter pack & the free setanta.

This is going to be on offer next thursday at Aldi for £89.99

aldi.co.uk/spe…tml

But why would you buy it at £90 when you can have it so much cheaper at John Lewis, with a 2 year warranty and without even leaving your house? This Argos deal is also much better than the Aldi deal IMO.

Looking at this it does look good, but wondering about the noise, etc if your recording at night. Is it worth the price, as I'm tempted to get extra £5.99 channels (I think thats the price anyway). Is it worth the unit at this price?

Looking around I've found sonme others:
Digihome DTR80 DTR with 80gig HDD - Argos 5321272 £84.99

Wharfedale WDTR160 DTR with 160GB HDD - Argos 5321155 £99.99

Or wait for better boxes to come out?

Thomson were the pioneers of PVRs in Europe (Tivo) and as this is the official TUTV box, they are in the position of having to get it near perfect with regular firmware updates. These have definitely ironed out a lot of the 'weaknesses' inherent when the box was first launched. The last big 'weakness' would appear to be the noise problem (although mine is very quiet indeed). Of the 3 you are looking at, my money would be on the Thomson to get it totally right (eventually). Plus if you buy from J Lewis you get 2 years warranty instead of the 1 you get elsewhere and probably the best CS of ANY retailer if you have problems.

PS Not sure I know what you mean by £5.99 extra channels but I'm assuming you mean TUTV? If so, it's £10/mth and you need a machine with a viewing card slot, the other 2 you mention don't have such a thing.

this is back in stock at john lewis now... 99.99 and there is the £20 voucher floating around, or has that finished?

Nope, the voucher code is still working, although it's changed.
