I admit that I don't know much about DVD players but this one seemed a good price for the features it has.

Enjoy 1080p Full HD images with the Thomson PVR500!

This Thomson PVR500 features DivX and MPEG4 certification, as well as a USB port for streaming content from external storage devices. The USB ripping function encodes audio CDs to MP3 files.

Sound produced by the PVR500 is of the same quality as pictures, thanks to the Dolby Digital decoder. Meanwhile, the PVR500's built-in tuner picks up a wide range of digital programmes.

so it's an upscaling DVD player and Freeview (non-HD) tuner in one?

Yes that's how I read it, plus the USB streaming and CD ripping functions too.

It doesn't appear to be a 'freeview' tuner, as in the freeview platform, but it is a DVB-T tuner.
Don't think you'll get the EPG in that case.
Happy to be proved wrong.

A DVD player with PVR in the model name? That's just confusing....

This is just an upscaling DVD player innit?

In the picture it has the Freeview sticker on the right, not sure if that means anything though?

With a built-in tuner which picks up a qide range of digital programmes.
.....

OK with some digging I found this which would indicate that you can record from the builtin tuner onto USB. Hence the PVR moniker.
Can't find any web sites which may be the manufacturers and I reckon this is probably a grey import, i.e. not for the UK market.

Not listed on the Freeview site, so I have some doubts....

pixmania+hduk=suicide!

Pixmania - no way!

Thomson sold their European electronics division to a Chinese company a while back, I guess this is one of the Chinese made products with Thomson's name stuck on it?

I don't know what Thomson sold exactly, ie the right to use their name or their actual technology division/designers etc.
