Three mobile scraps charges for 0800 calls

The cost of calling 0800 numbers from mobile phones will be made free for customers of Three from Tuesday, while charges for helplines run by hundreds of banks, utilities, insurance companies and broadband providers will be slashed.

Mobile networks make an estimated £600m a year by charging their customers up to 40p a minute to ring numbers which begin with the digits 08, and which are often free or a fraction of the price to ring from landlines, according to research from YouGov.

Britain's smallest operator Three, with 9 million customers, has abolished charges for 0800 numbers for all customers and cut the cost of any other number beginning with 08 and 05 to 5p a minute. The tariff will apply to all new contracts, and existing customers can sign up without having to extend their existing contracts.
To summarise our new 24 month Pay Monthly plans;

ktf
• Free 0800, 0808 and 0500 numbers
• 84* and 087* numbers just 5p per minute
• Texts alerts when you’re nearing your limit
• The ability to place spending caps
• Personal Hotspot functionality for all, but limited to 2GB if your plan includes All-You-Can-Eat data
• All-You-Can-Eat text messages
• A range of data allowances up to All-You-Can-Eat
• A range of minute allowances up to All-You-Can-Eat

Just spoke to 3 customer services and existing One Plan customers who want to sign up to the free 0800 calls will have their tethering capped at 2gb per month. I will not sign up under those terms but heat added. Tethering rights will not be affected if you don't sign up.

IF YOU ARE ON ONE PLAN AND TETHER OVER 2GB, BE CAREFUL

0800 Buster Access number - 01236210800
For those who don't want to give up their One Plan, but want to call 0800 using their minutes. Does not cover other 08 numbers unfortunately, but may help.

New contracts to be introduced today include data allowances from 500MB up to all-you-can-eat, with 50 mins or up to all-you-can-eat minutes, and unlimited texts. Tethering on 500MB, 1GB and 2GB plans can account for 100 percent of the data used, but on the all-you-can-eat plans tethering is now to be capped at 2GB. Additional tethering allowance is to be sold at an additional cost.

Speaking to Wired.co.uk ahead of the announcement, due today, Three also confirmed that its popular One Plan "will no longer be available for contract handset sales".

this is only for new contracts

Three are rubbish , I found OVIVO the best and FREE . Switched from Three and now paying no contract .

Thanks effingalandjeffin, good to know.

effingandjeffing

but on the all-you-can-eat plans tethering is now to be capped at 2GB

That's sad.

no more one plan?????? what a kick in the ****** thats what made three stand out

Great move! All carriers should not charge for calling to free 0800 numbers. It does not make sense when you are charged for using a free number as it is not included in your unlimited allowance. When you call these free numbers you are often put on hold and sometimes spend more time there than speaking to the actual person afterwards.

Lol, ovivo use the network with the worst coverage in the uk- Vodafone!

Will customers already on The One Plan with unlimited tethering get the free 0800 calls - or by 'upgrading' to free 0800 will we get tethering capped to 2GB?

Would be great to keep unlimited tethering AND get free 0800 calls...

They should not be able to change the existing agreement to the worse offer. Unless the agreement you signed says they can.

Good package, but as OVIVO runs on Vodafone, i am lucky if I can get a mobile signal, never mind a data connex as the East midlands seems to be a coverage wilderness

Shouldn't this be in the freebies section?oO

2GB cap on tethering is really bad LOOOL

So free calls (woo) but removing of unlimited......just about the same time as 4G starts to kick-in. Mobile companies really do their very best to remove cash from pockets don't they.

This really is overdue. I have been having problems recently and missed a call from their technical support team They texted me and asked me to call them back on an 08 number. Never thought about it until I got a bill for £12. Another hour long call got them to make a "gesture of goodwill" and credit me for the call. Can't wait for my contract to finnish

If only 3 didn't have **** weak signal.

exactly

I am an existing costumer, how can I sign up? Please reply me

That's sad.

each phone mast has a limited bandwidth which must be shared with all the devises communicating with it.

That amount improved lots from 2G to 3G and improves a lot from 3G to 4G but it is still limited.

if they had a truly unlimited sim or contract with tethering for a decent prixe im sure a lot of people would ditch their fixed line broadband and use that instead. About five years ago I had a sim dongle which was from three and gave unlimited broadband at £7.50pm whereas now they are closer to £20-30 and offer maximiums of 10-20GB

Good luck to one plan existing customers when you have to renew your contracts...

I've got the one plan, sim only.

What exactly does this mean to me?

Bit lost with this...

So true. Was on 3, tried Ovivo and their coverage was dire, now back to 3 again!

Not so long ago 3 were being rubbished on here...now with their very useful international deal (I used it in Sri Lanka for 3 weeks and paid nothing!) 4G for free and now this....Got to be the best network?

Sorry guys, its probably my fault we are losing unlimited data.

Vodafone used to be one of the best networks in the country but they are still not that bad .... No complaint down in London .

Or you can download the app WEQ4U , 90% of 08 numbers are free to call and they Q for you!!!

From Tuesday? Today Tuesday?

That's how the industry works. While I am not in favour of high charges i.e. 40p a min to call 08 number still they need money to invest in new technologies.

You can't run a company on charity and I am sure if you were working for one of these companies you would have something different to say.
