I have hundreds of board games, but I hate the 'classics' such as Monopoly that just go on for hours and cause loads of arguments.

Ticket to Ride is *the* best family board game there is: 2-5 players, 8 years and up, plays in under an hour, five minutes to learn the rules. It's really quick to play, and even non-gamers enjoy it. Every one of our friends and family that we've introduced this game to have gone out and bought a copy for themselves. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

Anyway, the usual RRP is £34.99 and Amazon have it for £24.44 - Bargain!

Manufacturer's Description
With elegantly simple gameplay, Ticket to Ride can be learned in 3 minutes, yet players face strategic and tactical decisions that vary with every turn. Players collect cards of various types of train cars that are then used to claim railway routes connecting various cities across a map of North America. The longer the routes, the more points they earn. Additional points come to those who can fulfill Destination Tickets - goal cards that connect two distant cities; and also to the player who builds the longest continuous route.

have to say this is great fun - when I last visited my dad we all played this and its much better than it sounds and I am suprised it has not been more popular! Apparently there are various versions, not sure of the one I played...

the original version is set in the USA, there is also a european one.

This however has inspired me to look for a game called "the great game of britain", which i used to love as a child.

The European one is what we played - I remember getting a train line from the furthest part of russia all the way to England!

You can get this on Xbox Marketplace for 800 point and the expansions "1910" for 400 points and "Europe" for 600 points for anyone who has a Xbox and wants to try it, Download the free trial version to see if you like it or not.

I agree the European version is better if you're into games... but it's extra rules for ferries, tunnels and stations make it a bit less accessible for younger children and casual players. Also it's £5 more expensive at the moment on Amazon.

The Xbox version is very nicely done and definitely worth looking at. As you say, the free trial gives an excellent introduction to the rules (though really the rules are so simple that no-one should have any difficulties with them).

Playing board games online? wow, that sounds like...the most boring experience i can imagine. Computer monopoly is bad enough, why would you want to remove the tactile experience from board games?

edit: btw, if anyone is interested in the europe version, this website has it (and many of the expansion sets) quite cheaply. But it is targetted at gaming clubs, and IIRC requires a minimum £50 order.

If the game is converted properly then why would it be boring unless the actual board game is boring to start off with, Being able to play online adds to the game too against people all over the world, I got a free code for "Connect 4" for the Xbox and i've played it loads of times since I got it both online and offline with friends and it has extra rules that you couldn't possibly do with the old board game version.
