What is Tidal and how is it different from Spotify etc?

Tidal is an ad-free music streaming service with over 57 million songs and 230,000 music videos. It’s an America-based company and it's co-owned by rapper Jay-Z and numerous other recording artists, including Beyoncé, Rihanna, Madonna, Calvin Harris, Kanye West and Coldplay's Chris Martin.

When comparing itself to other streaming services, Tidal claims to create a more sustainable business model that better supports artists, producers and songwriters, ie, pays them a bigger share of its revenue. Tidal’s website gives the visual breakdown (it’s in US dollars as it’s the company’s American) showing how monthly fees are distributed.

Brilliant thanks OP. Finally got something to use with my Squeezeboxes... HOT
This was posted a few months ago, still a good freebie though, and if it brings it to people's attention who missed it the first time around then that's a good thing.

Does it include the hi-fi option?

My Spotify is going to expire so I might as well give this a try.

The HiFi option drops the free period to 3 months. I've gone for that. Worth a try.

Thanks. I used to pay for Tidal hi-fi as a student. May try again
I use Spotify Family pack which gets you 2 accounts with 6 devices on each one for £14.99 per month.... got a child or get a friend and youve got £7.50 pm....AFTER this 6mnths free of course.

I put in my PayPal details but can’t see the hifi option ?
I'm not getting the option for a 6-month trial, what am I missing here? can you walk me through the process?
Thanks OP - I've been struggling to get the Spotify two month trial for some reason (probably had too many 30 day trails) so this looks just the ticket
I'm only getting an option for a 30 day trial, how do you get six months?

I posted this a while ago. 6months trial still works. Heat OP

Just signed up for the 6 months trial but how do you cancel subscription? I connected with Twitter and PayPal. I am following instructions on the site to click on subscriptions but the option to cancel my subscription is not showing and just states that I don't have any subscriptions. They are asking me to choose subscription but only offering 30 days on the app/website not the 6 months stated on the link. Anybody know what you need to do in order to get the 6 months free trial?

Playlists and discovery are nowhere near as good as Spotify's and the apps a bit unresponsive at times but it's definitely worth free!
Can't seem to find this. Only has 30 day trial on the site. Anyone have a solution? Cheers

Spotify sounds exactly the same unless you have high end gear that would be able to discern the tiny differences between 320kbs AAC (tidal) and 320kbs OGG (spotify).

The annoying thing Spotify does though, is enable normalisation by default. This crushes all the detail out of any track you play and makes zero sense why they force people to use this by default. It should always be turned off.

That might be where you perceive Spotify as having a lower sound quality compared to Tidal. The 320kbps AAC Tidal use is actually overkill too, as theres no audible difference between that and Apples 256kbs AAC files.

Basically every streaming service, even Youtube Music, has enough quality at max settings to be indistinguishable for most users. If you can hear the difference, then your gear should be anywhere near lossy sources, and is more apt for Tidals £20 tier (not included in this offer).
