How does the GPS work on these units? Does it have a separate GPS unit? …How does the GPS work on these units? Does it have a separate GPS unit? Thanks

Yep. It’s just a 25x25mm square dongle that plugs in line with the power.
The power lead is a 4m long cigarette lighter plug to mini usb wire, which plugs into the gps . The gps has a 20cm wire coming out the other side with a mini usb which plus into the camera. Weird arrangement I know but the gps patch has its own stick window thing and sits on the top of the car. This is mine

Just to clarify... The footage is not recorded in 4K. It simply creates a 4K res video file from a lower res recording. Basically, just consider it a 1080 cam

Got two of these a few months back on an extremely similar discount. Definitely worth the money, the video is smooth and the unit is very well hidden away behind my rear view mirror: no obstruction at all. Only gripe is that the field of view is a little too large as I would rather the camera looked down towards the road more and see less if the sky, but it still manages to record the sky and my dash.

No cigarette lighter socket, no GPS?
Was going to go for this, but £40 seems the normal ebay price anyway so not a massive saving.

very imporant
might as well do this on every dashcam and upscale the video on the pc
Does the parking monitor run off an internal battery or does it depend on you having a perminantly live cigar socket?
Seems to be £39.99 unless I am missing something

There's a code next to the, "get deal" button. Presumably this drops it to the stated price.

Edit* Just tried the code, didn't work for me. £39.99 for me also.

Thanks. Doesn't seem to work for me
For anyone interested in a dual camera setup. I can highly recommend the Apeman C860. It's available for £65 at the moment, that includes the rear camera also. No GPS or available modules, however.

Footage is on par, if not better than my NextBase 522GW. It's also low profile and easily tucks away behind the rearview.

Link to product.

Dashcam would have an internal battery. The cigarette lighter is ignition switched so recording starts as soon as you turn the engine on. Hence when you hardwire a dashcam you need to identify one of the ignition switched circuits and piggyback off it or it will drain your battery.

Any chance you could make and post a short file of footage taken on the camera please?

What a good guy I am; of course!
Just been put to grab a few files. I only record in 2.7k 30fps. But as you’ll see, it’s bloody good.

That looks good . YouTube compressed video which always detracts from it. Thank you for making the effort to share!

You’re welcome. I completely understand, I’ve seen a few crappy dash cam videos and you never know if the good ones recorded in traffic in China can be trusted. Plus remember, it goes up to 4k.

It's rarely YouTube compression that makes a video look bad. It's whatever software the uploader used to convert the original file before uploading. 99% of the time it's some basic free software that compresses it heavily and adds artefacts all over the place.

I was shocked when I saw the raw footage from a couple of my own dash cams after seeing the average YouTube videos of sample footage.

Handbrake is your best bet (It's free), using the default preset of, "Fast 1080 30p" works well for dash cams, providing the original frame rate was also 30fps.

Hopefully this helps some people out.
VLC screenshot of raw footage from the Apeman C860. Number plates easily readable in a 30mph zone with moving traffic.
