    Why this over Google maps?

Because this is satellite navigation not cell mast navigation.

I've had 2 TomToms, the 2nd was a 500 series with worldwide 'lifetime maps'. To keep the Traffic function working after the first couple of free years I'd now need to subscribe and it's expensive. The 'lifetime maps' updates (where updating them was a huge faff, connect to PC and do about 6 steps) long ago stopped. Both TomToms batteries failed after about 3 years, I think they don't cope with windscreen heat and always charging very well. I replaced both batteries myself with 3rd party replacements but that was no trivial job. I used to take cradle etc abroad for use in hire cars.

Nowadays I just use my phone (take my own cradle for hire cars) and use Google Maps. So long as I've got roaming data, traffic updates and traffic rerouting work fine. Map sections can easily be dowloaded to save on data. For those still kéen on TomTom there's a phone app, though not for the large vehicles version regrettably.

Same thing happened to me, but that's rechargable batteries for you they die after a while. Mine stopped going into standby mode due to rechargeable batteries not charging after a few years and took forever to boot up as a result!. So I went into YouTube and found a guide of how to replace it and soldered in a new one. I think the replacement battery cost me about £15 off eBay. (edited)

I have an earlier version of this less the WiFi and Siri integration. The lifetime traffic updates have simply been a lifesaver to me over the years, you just share your Internet connection via Bluetooth for internet access and away you go.

And before you say why not just Waze or Google Maps on your phone, I used to do that but it was a right flap putting my phone in a cradle, connecting it up etc etc.

With this you just switch on and go, no messing around with cradles... (edited)

Excellent points very well put. Mine is just on the dashboard all the time and I don't need to think twice about setting up my phone whenever I get into the car with all the hassle that this involves.

I've got the tomtom go and I've found it the reverse to what your saying the one I have is brilliant compared to the older models and the live is very good. If you own an old out of date tomtom then it prob will be useless. I've used all the free ones google waze etc but they're not as good as the dedicated tomtom device.
