Not always. I've seen many TVs listed as HD ready but then say 1080p.
HD Ready means that the device is capable of processing signals of 720p, 1080i or 1080p - normally the TV will specify which with the logo.

this looks like a good deal... but I really can not decide on what to do about a TV... I am leaving the ex. with my trusty 42 inch LG I bought 5+ years ago and need to buy a new TV for my own house. I do not have a fortune to spend, but I want something good(ish) and I do not want to downsize ideally (or at least not much).

Do I really need smart capabilities when I have a media player? this TV here looks like a good deal, but I do not actually need a TV until start of Feb, and the saving on this is not massive... maybe I should hang back and look for a better deal closer to the time, but the best sales are generally in January and I do not want to miss the boat

Definitely Full HD (1080P)

Sometimes the producer is not willing to pay extra money for 'Full HD' logo, so they put HD Ready. As long as the box and instruction say 1080p it is Full HD - 1920x1080,

Smart TVs, in my opinion, are generally a waste of money, considering you can get an external device that will give you all the features you get in a smart TV. You could buy an Intel NUC and have a home theater PC for films etc.

What to look for:

1080p
LED
60Hz

They're the main features you want. Your best bet is to find somewhere where you can look at TVs - reviewers normally base reviews on colour accuracy rather than the appealing look of the picture - to some people warmer colours look better (they do to me).

Viewing experiences are very subjective, much like sound.

cool, thank you.... I will pop into Belfast richer sounds closer to the time and just buy one off the shelf... I just do not want to miss the boat on deals... though I never look for the latest and greatest, so I am sure there will always be end of line models

if it makes you feel any better i left my 50" sammy plasma with the ex... bought a 42" LG LED week or 2 ago... she told me shes got a new TV now so i can have the sammy back

was the 42 inch plasma the currys offer for 269.99? wish I have moved on that faster!

Original Poster

no it was a 3D Smart LED from john lewis price matched my sammy when i originally bought that, was £2.5k when plasma first came out it was pretty much the biggest you could get at the time at 50"

I have such a lit of crap to buy, mot of it boring as sin, but a TV has to come before sofas, and TV before tv-stand. only thing that comes in front is beds for the kids LOL

LED= LCD but the back-lighting is done with LEDs instead.

To confuse you even more, you get different types of LED back-lighting: en.wikipedia.org/wik…ght

i wasn't confused to start with lol

LCD is used to refer to fluorescent lamp lit panels
LED is used to refer to LED lit panels

even though like you say both types of panel are LCD just lit differently, its how people and companies have come to refer to them

and since were on about it

OLED is used to refer to a panel where each individual pixel is lit by itself each pixel is an LED

dont get a smart tv as the software on the tv does not get updated and will be redundent in less than a year meaning you have to buy another tv
......if you have a games console wii xbox ps you can use that and just down load apps you tube facebook netflix etc.....much cheaper option than roku or now tv box

i disagree, i have PS3 and PS4 and i only use apps on those which aren't available for my LG TV but then again, i use my phone and laptop for facebook as opposed to my TV LG has a large selection of apps and games available which isn't even rivaled IMO by a console, i cant comment about the roku boxes etc i have no experience of them, the only thing i would say COULD be better would be something like a chromebox with access to android play store n its plethora of content apps games movies books etc

going back to my smart TV and consoles, i stream via Plex from my laptop using DNLA uPNP Media Server, my TV PS3 and PS4 support this, however ill use the TV, as its more convenient, its one less device switched on, its server to client, rather than server - client - tv

agreed some SMART TV's are worth staying away from just for their Smart capabilities alone but the more well known brands and higher end TV's such as LG samsung and sony will have plenty of "smart" life in them IMO

they've got a similar model with freeview HD and free 5 years warrenty for only £30 extra
