These models get very hot and have a sleep function which you cant turn off unless you use a script that keeps writing every 10 min.

Bit waste of money. Not much more for 2x 4tb

not great value

Was thinking a similar thing too .....

There've been a few Postings (which are still 'Live & Fresh') on HUKD of some 3TB + 4TB External Drives that if u timezed the 3TB by 2 = 6TB .. or 2 x 4TB = 8TB .. the Prices of the 2 Combinations would effectively be similar in Price to the 1 x 5TB?.

The fact that 1 person on here mentioned that the 5TB has a tendency to heat up a bit kinda makes sense? (at 5TB, thats a lot of Hard Drive in a very small space ..... ) which is a bit worrying in itself .....

Good Deal for the one & only 5TB External Hard Drive out there though ..... :-)

Create a scheduled task to write a Text file every 18 mins and a second to delete it every 10 min you will of course need a PC on 24/7 to run the scheduled task's

Thanx for that .. I think a 3TB, &/or a 4TB Drive thats continuous would be better for me for now still? ...

This 5TB Drive would be good for those that not want to Turn-Off this 5TB Hard Drive, & want to keep it 'ON' 24/7 too? (then this Sleep Mode ofcourse would be perfect ..... ) :-)

5TB awesome.

5tb ha ha I like it. Will wait till they do an SSD of this size for 30 quid before jumping in.

Who on earth has so much p0rn??

There's also a piece of software called KeepAliveHD which automates this, I've used it before on an Apple Time Capsule which kept spinning down (damn Apple logic)

Is that all you use your computer for? Perv.

Newegg were doing 6TB Seagates for £178 delivered to the UK + approx £40 import duty/vat a few weeks ago, gone up to about £210 now + the import duty...

...Just so people are aware before jumping on a 5TB drive, and yes I know it's a Seagate (blah blah blah)

hope it comes with a 10 year guarantee because thats how long it will take me to use up 5tb.

So much data... loss

5 tera whats?

Strange that the older models of the Canvio did not do this?

Wonder if there is some firmware that could be flashed from the older versions so that the newer ones operate the same? (i.e. do not sleep!)

Exactly what i'm thinking. Especially for a external/portable drive... that can be dropped or damaged by coffee for example.
