In case anyone is interested I don't think these use SATA connectors so no good for use in a PC/laptop/Games console. I looked up the 500Gb one as I had a spare voucher I was looking to spend and general consensus on Amazon reviews was not SATA (of those who understood the question) so no good to rip apart for a cheap drive.

You could connect it to an Xbox through a USB port simply. Why bother with taking the hdd off?

So HOT from me.

Sorry, but what do you mean, no good for use in a PC laptop console???? What's it good for ?
Bought for my PS4, thanks for posting.
Reading the reviews I think it does use SATA, can't see why Toshiba would go to the hassle of using anything else really.

It will work with anything that uses USB (ideally 3.0 but USB2 will work), the comment about SATA is referring to ripping the enclosure apart to get the disk or and then installing in a PC

Surely they can't make that much profit. £10 per piece I reckon.

They do maximum final value discounts and stuff on eBay or no deductions if they sell on Facebook / gumtree £100 profit for 10 I suppose
I had one of these and had to send it back, although it was a slightly older model (still a Canvio).

The range has built in 'spin down' on the disks that can not be disabled. No settings in windows / drive firmware can be adjusted to stop it. It's built into the firmware on the SATA -> USB controller.

Every 2 mins or so the drive will spin down. Next time you access it, it'll spin up again, which takes 5-7seconds.

This isn't going to be an issue for consoles and such, but I found it infuriating when being used as a development drive.

It won't matter to many people I know, but frustrating if you're one of the ones who doesn't want it.
What's the rpm on these?

You must be able to get something that will query the drive at a set interval so it doesn't sleep.
Ordered thanks... heat...

Yeah, there is free software to do this....but I move around machines a lot (hence a portable external). I don't want to hassle of this every time.
Plus, it's different on each OS. On Windows there are programs for it. On Linux I need to fire off bash scripts. On Mac.....I don't even know.
It was just a massive hassle for me, for such a simple thing.

Yes and some ie seatage 2tb contain a drive with a standard sata connector so it can be removed and used in other devices and they are generally cheaper their standalone version.
Western Digital 2TB My Passport for £39.99 -if you don’t mind “recertified”.
