I would prefer to have an optical drive so I can play a dvd if and when I want

Why is this going cold? Surely it is the best affordable chromebook around right now - and you can't go wrong with John Lewis and their warranty. I am really tempted as I start uni in September and it would be a perfect companion to my desktop.

Thanks guys. I thought I'd missed something when I posted this and it went cold. Been looking at a windows laptop but always been tempted by this.

The sd version is £169.95 on Amazon!

I missed out on the previous John Lewis deal and ended up flubiting at around £240. The chrome book is that good I bought another for others in the household, this time from costco again around £240. This is a great price for a great piece of kit as long as you understand what you're buying.

I did consider the lower spec model for my second purchase but the full HD screen and 4GB ram are worth the extra.

I saw both Versions side by side, I then realised how much better the HD version was. Before that I think I would have been happy with the 103 SD version, but not now..

Amazon 1-4 weeks despatch time :-(

Best Chromebook there currently is, well, until the Dell Chromebook 13 is released in October

Brilliant Chromebook, fast, nice hd screen, no virus, long battery, so much better than my old Samsung chromebook.

Think I agree. Looking for a cheapish full-hd laptop (let down by a misdescription on a recent Amazon lightning deal!) and thought this looked like an interesting alternative - after all only need laptop for browsing, email, VNC connection to work and ability to play DVDs ... but after a bit of research discovered that even if you connect a USB DVD drive chrome OS won't play DVDs - OK, you can rip the DVD on a PC and copy it to the Chromebook but it's probably one compromise too many

Trust me, if you see the two side by side you’ll want the HD version. The screen isn’t just higher res, it also has much better contrast & is an IPS screen so it has decent viewing angles. 4Gb of RAM makes a big difference to chromebook as well supposedly.

This device is the current WireCutter best buy Chromebook, so you can’t really go wrong picking it up at this price.

Was looking round for something bigger than my present Samsung Chromebook and did consider the HP Stream but I just love the speed of the Chromebook and I've hardly used my old laptop since getting a Chromebook. This sounds as though it has a lovely screen and is just big enough.

I tried Bespoke Offers to beat the price at JL and at Amazon, both came back with 6.8% off so £204.95

I side with those who say the FHD version is worth it. Got mine the last time John Lewis had this deal.

Back up to £269.95

anyone managed to get linux installed on these? do they have a hdmi out?

brilliant laptop however it doesn't handle streaming 1080p video very well...

Beast of a Chromebook, absolutely love mine and the W10 laptop hardly gets a look in now. All depends on what you want out of a device of course, but if you're in the market for a CB then you can't go wrong with one of these.

Deal needs expiring as its now gone up.

I went to JL to get this at £169 and I picked it up then as I was walking past the sale item's I seen the FHD one for £189 , after asking the sales staff they told me that it had only been opened and returned that's why it was that price what a bargin , I was just there in the right place at the right time , I'm glad I walked past the sale's display . it's amazing what you can find if your in the right place at the right time .
