Looks like a fairly good tablet compared to some of the Linx and other 7" tablet deals. This actually has 2GB of RAM and 32GB of storage. Also has a higher resolution screen.
Has the quad core baytrail Atom as well, so shouldn't be too slow.

It says it's a manager's special, but it has a 1 year warranty anyway so I shouldn't imagine it would give any trouble.

Toshiba's Encore Windows 8.1 tablet has a bright, clear 20.32 cm (8) AutoBrite™ HFFS display with a wide viewing angle and superior screen quality, which makes it ideal for watching movies on the move. With multi-touch support you're ready to enjoy a fully immersive, interactive entertainment experience anywhere - whether you're playing videos or accessing your choice of over 1 million e-books on the tablet's Kindle reader*. Encore is optimised for portrait and landscape views too, so you can see content how it was meant to be seen.

10 point multi touch and HDMI out....
Nice tablet for the money

so after an 8.1 update 8.16gb left of 22.9gb.( firefox and a photo editor)
i turned on narrator oooooooooooo sooooooooooooo sloooooooooooooooooooow i had to wait several minutes for it to gather it's senses before i could turn it off again. what does this say about windows licensing arrangements? if i wanted to show my product off to best advantage i would want to make sure it could behave as intended. i know what microsoft claim are minimum specs,a comatose patient might be alive and breathing but i think most of us would want a little more life than that.
i've increased the page file to 1931mb so i shall wait and see how performs now.
all of these gadgets function in a basic fashion but 'WINDOWS' leads one to believe something better is at hand, this might not be the case, actually.

oh i forgot to say, only 280mb of that 2gb are left. 280!!! i think we all know windows needs around 650mb minimum to function which is part if not the whole of the problem.

Still, HDMI is a nice addition.

A cleaned up install of Windows 8.1 will take 300/350MB of RAM at startup. If you want more storage space, look up WIMBOOT.

I'm using an Asus T100 (same specs as the Toshiba).

I currently have 5 Chrome tabs open, 3 Internet Explorer ones, iTunes, Spotify & TVCatchup (playing Scotland vs Argentina)....
This is being done on a dual screen setup with a 1080p 24" screen.
My CPU is running at 16%, and my memory is at 65%....(1.2GB of 1.9GB used)

HOW are you using so much memory?!

It'll be with startup apps like anti virus and firewall etc. My system takes over 2GB at startup but with useful stuff.

hi have no idea yet, i have merely switched it on and performed some simple functions. there are obviously some issues that need to be resolved, but i have really done nothing except report to you all what happens to some of these.
i will look at wimboot.

so toshiba update notification. update bios from 1.20 to 1.60. yayas dun that. then, go to pc settings you have important updates, so another 255mb update download.
does seem an excessive amount of update downloading but..... here we go.....

connection failed. but, intel platform installer win8.1 32bit 2prs8.1 for malta which will include txev1054 for toshiba service station replace realtek audio codec and add dobly function.( not my spelling error)

93mb

It would have originally come with Office 2013. However, those licence keys never make it through the refurb process!

My business sells this very model brand new with office home & student license for £185 so without office this doesn't sound like a good deal to me.
Mods - am I allowed to post my website address? ;-)

You can now get Office 365 & unlimited OneDrive space for £5.99 per month...
A year of unlimited cloud storage and Office 365 sounds like a pretty good alternative to standalone Office 2013...

Beware , no mention of Office (if you need it).

I had a brand new one of these and sent it back after a week it was useless, it kept freezing and required a hard reset to get it working again. It could of been due to excessive ram use meaning the tablet had nothing left to run on so froze. Avoid these they are rubbish, poster who said his company are selling them for £185 that's way more than they are, I paid £149 for mine new. Amazon where selling the lenovo and Asus for around the £150.

I've had near identical tablets (Venue 8 Pro, ASUS T100) and they both flew doing anything you'd expect a tablet to do.
2GB RAM is more than enough for most things on Windows 8.1. Look at the new ones with only 1GB coming out.

Theirs hardly anything identical with either tablet you have mentioned they are made by different companies that use different hardware the only similarities are CPU, and memory. The Toshiba may of had a hardware issues i did say it could of been the memory having some impact but it also could of been some kind of hardware failure, task manager did show excessive memory usage that's why i thought it may of been that. It could of been over heating but the key is is that these are refurbished units which must of also had problems, also remember that every user will install different programs to do different things which use different resources so one may have a perfectly running machine where as the other might have a machine that crashes and is unusable.

some days later
updates all(?) complete and the system seems to have reorganised itself, the memory is now 1.2gb used and with the increase in paging file 1.9gb. i have deleted the update duplications of 500+mb, but i have not as yet tried either bluetooth or hdmi, both of which may have issues and may need other updates.
what i will say about windows on an 8inch tablet is that my fingers find it difficult to access the correct screen position for icons, adjustments do make this easier but there appears to be too much information, too many small icons in a condensed space.
i purchased a small stylus but this is too wide really and given the price of a skinny bit of plastic i think this omission by manufacturers is slightly tight given the benefits it may offer, you know, fractions of a penny bulk, is too much to give the customer.
office, on mine came with some license 2013 (currys).

Does Autobright mean that this is an RGBW pentile display? Because at this rather low resolution, I cannot imagine that looking smooth.

I had one of these earlier in the year, and returned it after 8.1 update seemed to kill bluetooth audio. It would intermittently cut out. Fine with 8 - but maybe I got unlucky.

If this comes with 8.1, maybe that problem was fixed with a later version of the hardware.

I now have the Linx 7 which seems to be as good as far as I can tell from casual usage in spite of having less RAM.

I just ordered a Linx 7 as a light-use tablet (with Dropbox offline support) so I did wonder how that 1GB less RAM vs. this tablet stacks up. People complain but it's my understanding Windows does it's best with all available memory be that 1, 2 or more GB. I'm trying to work out if it's worth paying more for this Toshiba again, I did have this model before but paid a lot more for it.

Does it have 3G & GPS ?

thanks

When the asus t100 was released it was full of bugs, took a year for asus to sort it. Its the problem you have at the budget end, manufacturers dont want to spend a lot of time testing.

I had similar issues with mine (eventually wouldn't boot) but I can confirm that they're software issues.
I put a fresh install of Windows 8.1 on there (WIMBoot method gives you 22GB free) and it's been solid as a rock for the past 4 months.
A BIOS update will help with some issues but it didn't stop mine from becoming unbootable.

It's a great tablet but Toshiba need to focus on their driver stack.
HDMI-out is the killer feature for me - add a USB hub and you have a desktop computer
Performance-wise, I was quite surprised - it can run Burnout Paradise on medium settings (gets a bit warm but doesn't stutter).

can anyone comment on how these handle 1080p movies over HDMI? Also what the battery life is like on them. Looking to ditch my Android tablet for a Windows one and this looks good.

My Asus T100 handles 1080p on Youtube without any issue. As far as I am aware, Youtube is far more resource heavy than a standard offline 1080p file.
(This is outputting to a 1080p 24" screen)

More RAM is always good, but I reckon the processor and SSD in the Linx compensates a lot. I tried out an AMD based laptop with a traditional hard drive with 1GB of RAM earlier in the year. It was an absolute dog on Windows 8 (and 8.1) - and only somewhat improved with an SSD and 2GB of RAM.

Personally, if I were considering the 8 inch Linx v this - I might be tempted to try this Toshiba first (and see if the software driver problems have been sorted). An extra gig of RAM for an extra tenner is probably worth having. From memory, the Toshiba screen quality is better (less grainy) than the Linx too.

If you're considering the Linx 7 - it's a much harder choice as there's 30 quid difference.

But there's a £30 trade in offer with the Linx 7 and 8 from select retailers, so the difference could be more significant for some. I have a rubbish Viewsonic tab that's eligible so may consider the Linx.

Agreed. That's another factor if relevant to you.

Had my one for a year it's been brilliant. I sold my iPad mini with retina and kept this instead. I preferred the ability to run full windows and use HDMI out for plugging into my TV or a monitor.

I get very good battery life out of mine, it's not as good as a iPad but I get through I full day with it easily watching youtube, surfing the web all day long. Light use I need to charge it every 3 or 4 days.

I am not a big gamer on tablets I use them more to surf and its much better web surfer than anything from apple or android IMHO, I have up to ten tabs open in chrome with no lag or reloading on any of them, YouTube videos will keep streaming in the background while in different tab or in office. Running adblock in chrome as it's full desktop version improves your experience too.

If you want to game you can install a ton of PC games that run decent, I even had EVE online running on it albeit at low settings but it ran fine. Also there is a fair amount of games in the 8.1 store that are more like traditional tablet games. The only game I miss from my iPad is boggle! Shows you the kind of tablet gamer I am

Downsides are the tablet style apps are not as good or as many as apple and if you use desktop mode clicking can be fiddly as it's designed more for a mouse, however I have no issues really myself clicking menu bars and stuff.

Anyway mines been perfect no issues at all and it came with Office 2013 though as some say refurbs may not have it. I would recommend it at this price if you want a full windows tablet in a portable form factor.

What the hell, bought it!

Been watching these, the Miix and Venue for a while.

Just interested in messing around with a windows tablet..

Typical statement when seller remembers to put this addition note : "Manufacturer refurbished “Note: MS Office Not included". If listing does not mention MS Office then should come with none.
