Although likely to come down in price some more since Toshiba confirmed HD DVD is to be discontinued this is a better player than the HD-EP30 with an impressive spec including 7.1 Audio Output.

Amazon offer a 30 day refund of the difference should they drop the price again so you're pretty well protected from further price drops.

With HD DVD discs prices set to plummet and excellent upscaling this might be a good stop gap until Toshiba shows the current Blu Ray manufacturers how it should be done... ;-)

Cold, HD-DVD is dead. There's no point getting this at all even for the upscaling...

Someone (make that a number of someones!) doesn't seem to agree wtih you creamhackered, sorry! :-P

Oh, and I don't mean the bit bout HD DVD being dead, I'd be surprised if it wasn't. What I mean is that this is a good buy contrary to your post.

i feel sorry for all those who got one from QVC at an inflated price

Wow, it did get cold in here pretty quickly. Was at 15 degrees when I posted last time. Now -1. Any bets on how low this will go?

Thought it was an ok deal given Play are asking for £20 more and don't offer the refund the difference promise...

are there any hd dvd players that can play divx and have a usb port ?
if there is then i think they would be worth buying

(this is a genuine question I'm not trying to be funny or anything)

Original Poster Banned

Think they have usb ports but certain that they can't play DivX...

The upscaling on this is supposed to be superior to the ep30 and you get better audio options. All those cold voters please name where you can get this cheaper now? Put up or shut up.

Unless this can be got cheaper - then its the hottest price atm......

wheres the liquid nitrogen button?

usb ports are for unrealesed games controllers only.

No hd-dvd player can play divx

deep freeze....all because hd is supposedly dead....good deal if you are after an hd dvd player....I somehow think we are going to see a lot of HD DVD bargains over the next few weeks until stocks run out.

less than 3 minutes to post this reply, wot do u blu-ray idiots do sit there waiting for these posts to arrive so u can put the boot in, sad, so sad!!

The EP30 is probably a better choice as it's a little cheaper, it takes a while to turn-on but i've no complaints with it, the picture ^ sound is great and if the format does die, well there will be some bargins to be had over the coming weeks won't there.

if the format dies???

where have you been mate it is DEAD OFFICIAL!

now move on.

"The upscaling on this is supposed to be superior to the ep30 and you get better audio options. All those cold voters please name where you can get this cheaper now? Put up or shut up."

It's not about getting it cheaper, it's about why somebody would want to buy a format that will be impossible to get any new movies for in 4 months time.

Also, these will get much cheaper over the next few months as retailers try and dump stock. So if anybody does want to buy an HD-DVD machine, they should wait a bit longer and try and pick one up for a fraction of this price.

I'd hold on a few weeks for the firesale to hot up.

besides, play are selling the hp30 for 80 squid.

definition of dead? no hardware being manufactured, plants shut down?

moron? if thats how you define one id hate to see what you call yourself, id put in a call to the samaritans now m8 youve got severe self hate issues.

Betamax isnt dead you can still get tapes for it at bootsales!
which is where youll be getting your hd-dvds in a couple of months time when stocks run out (assuming there is much stock anyway)

ikduncan;1604109

definition of dead? no hardware being manufactured, plants shut down?

well the plants are not being shut down but there's not going to be any more hardware manufactured as of March 2008, so it seems pretty close to dead. Only about 1 million customers worldwide compared to blu rays 10 million

thankfully i havent bought either was waiting for a winner (and for a nice big price drop) and i think ive found it!

As reported elsewhere Comet aren't dumping their stocks but will be realigning their prices so as to make them the same as current upscaling DVD players so as to effectively give the HD-DVD aspect for free.

Makes sense as that's the bottom price for these HD-DVD's players as that's is in escence what they will become.

why are people getting so angry about all this?

just think of all the carbon footprints destroyed on a daily basis to make all these shiny discs - that ultimately our grandchildren will mock us for buying. :-D

Is everyone on hotukdeals a major shareholder in HD-DVD or something?

Good argument that mate, Betamax is still alive through boot-sales! Winner!!
This HD player is a lot cheaper than any blu-ray machine, which plays films pretty much to the same spec as a blu-ray machine does. The format may no longer be supported but so what, there are enough films out there to allow some-one buying this machine today to watch a new film every day for 18 months by which time the blu-ray price may have reduced or even a new player has rolled into town. Don't be so quick to pronounce the death of the format, when u have to go to a boot sale to purchase an hd film, then you can can officially call the format dead but not whilst HMV can deliver next day.
Again, I would buy the EP30 as it is cheaper and a good machine but I don't own this machine so i'm not really in a position to comment on its quality.

Quote from a well known sketch for a laugh: -
HD DVD Owner: I wish to complain about this HD DVD what I purchased not half an hour ago from this very boutique.
Shop: Oh yes, the, uh, the Toshiba HD DVD...What's,uh...What's wrong with it?
HD DVD Owner: I'll tell you what's wrong with it, my lad. It's dead, that's what's wrong with it!
Shop: No, no, it's uh,...it's resting.
HD DVD: Look, matey, I know a dead format when I see one, and I'm looking at one right now.
Shop: No no it's not dead, it's, it's restin'! Remarkable HD DVD, the Toshiba, idn'it, ay? Beautiful picture!
Mr. Praline: The picture don't enter into it. It's stone dead.
And so it goes on

In its basic form it states that today 19/02/08, Toshiba have admitted that HD DVD has been defeated, Blue Ray is the winner.

And my stating in the original deal post that toshiba had announced HD DVD was discontinued didn't cover that how?

Also, you might want to learn how to spell Blu-Ray. Personally, I think digital download is the winner...

Your average joe is not going to want to pay for something they cant touch, then theres the whole getting it off the pc to the tv. And i doubt the vast majority of people would give up sky which offers hd movies already to switch to virgin.

Downloads may well be the future but in reality its years away.
