Cheap for an HD PVR I think. Seen instore at Tesco Extra Bidston Moss in Merseyside. As always do your own research, marketing blurb says:
Housed in a glossy black casing, the Toshiba HDR5010 is a dedicated PVR for Freeview HD TV, allowing you to receive and record your favourite digital TV channels in stunning high definition. The twin Freeview HD tuners in the HDR5010 allow you to watch one channel while recording another to watch later, plus the ability to pause and rewind live TV. A 500GB hard drive can hold up to 250 hours of standard definition TV or 120 hours of HD TV, so you can watch your favourite shows any time you like.2 USB ports mean the HDR5010 can also be used to view digital photos from your digital camera, listen to MP3s from a music player and even play back digital video on your TV via this HD PVR. Interactive features can be downloaded straight onto the machine by Ethernet cable, and an audio description system is also incorporated giving an additional narrative for the visually impaired.3 HDMI connections also mean you can connect and play HD devices on your TV, making the HDR5010 an ideal addition to your home entertainment system.

Picture of it on the shelf for those who like a picture of something on a shelf.

Bought one a couple of days ago for the inlaws but have it on test. I notice quite a few people were not happy with them a few months ago in a thread at the time. There have been no firmware updates at all since then. can't test the HD as we don't have it transmitted yet but SD pictures look a little cool, less vibrant than my Humax Freesat Foxsat HDR.

How do you find the Humax Freesat because we have come out of half price Sky+ HD (only got it because I needed a dish on my new property)?

I have been looking at the 1TB version with iplayer.
A very good price for this, but for me the downside was the bright light circular light on the front even when the unit is on standby! Better to get a Humax if you can afford it, but then you're looking at double the price.
Looks like a good price of you can find one. Judging by one of the posts in AVForums, this has been the in-store price since at least Friday so I suspect that most of them will have been sold.

There certainly aren't any left at the Corstorphine, Edinburgh branch as I have just come back from there. The sign was up but the shelf was bare.

The Humax freesat box is excellent, cannot fault it really except for nitpicking. It is solid, reliable and pictures and sound are excellent. I have had it maybe a year and a half (?) and there have only been a couple of times when I thought it missed recordings, but tbh it is very good. I do find the EPG a little slow if the box has been turned off and I have ocasional problems with the video and sound sync when I use it via my Onyko AV receiver. The box isn't perfect, but tbh, very good and I would recommend it.How do you find the Humax Freesat because we have come out of half price Sky+ HD (only got it because I needed a dish on my new property)?I have been looking at the 1TB version with iplayer.

Im going looting there later, ill look out for it....Oh no wait, im not a scumbag! oO

Hi I bought the Humax HD Fox-T2 for £90 at John Lewis, then just connected it to a 1TB Hard Drive via USB works like a dream. Hard Drive was £35 from Comet. Works out a lot cheaper plus you have your own Hard Drive.

Would've been helpful if you mentioned that your setup has only one tuner, so you're limited to recording one programme at a time. Not really a viable alternative to a £130 Twin-Tuner HD PVR.

picked one up from Tesco in Baldock on Monday - they had about 5 on display...with a price ticket of £299. After staff discount, got this for £116 - so well impressed so far.
Do tescos accept love2shop vouchers? Would be great if they did because then I could afford to get this.......been looking for donkeys years for a freeview HD recorder! Is it worth just waiting for the digi stream to go down in price since I've seen a lot of users recommend them or this is PVR pretty much the same? As you can probably tell I'm not a very technical person...help!
None in Carrick or Newtownabbey NI stores, anyone else in NI get one of these?

There is a firmware update mentioned on 14/07/11 on AV forums, the writer says it was sent to him from Toshiba but doesnt appear on their website at the moment. see:- post #24 on the AV forum.
http://www.avforums.com/forums/pvrs-vcrs/1278518-toshiba-hdr5010-500gb-freeview-hd-pvr-master-thread.html
The firmware update sent to him is 1.2.A1550.D280.F100 which he has made downloadable,
Apparently it replaces version 1.2.A1488.D254.F99. ----- it might be worth waiting to see
if this upgrade is beneficial first though.

update 18th aug ---- for some reason the firmware update has been removed from the AV forum

Thanks, yes, did see that, seems to be a very minor revision.
Just to say that Corstorphine, Edinburgh had these this evening. There were still two left on the shelf after I had picked up one.
Been down to the Coventry Rioch store, there were 2 on the shelf and I had one. Be quick if anyone wants the other
anyone found any in manchester?
anyone got the product code for this?

Yes,you could be right ------ My brother who had already bought one of these bought one for me
yesterday, when we set it up he was convinced my firmware update is more recent than his ---
mine is 099 he reckons his is 098 ----- anyway i have emailed Toshiba to find where the list of
updates are on their site as yet they have not replied ----- if anyone can locate them can they
post it on here ---- cheers.
Bought a second one of these today at Tesco B-leys Leicester. First one has been fine for a week.

Coincidentally whilst I was there, a chap had just swopped his first for a second as it failed to initialise from standby. I guess you get duds with any product so here's hoping...

Cockseye... if you get a response from toshiba please post the result thanks
Still got some in Bidston Moss store today if anyone's interested!
Been trawling around in different tescos but no luck for me. It's an amazing price
4 of these in Lichfield Tesco this morning - 3 near the front by the newspapers in a big Toshiba display, and 1 at the back by the AV stuff. I just got back from there... Had one in my trolley for a while then thought better of it (still holding out for the perfect freeview hd / blu ray combo). Great deal though.

I havent heard anything from Toshiba yet,but apparently this model is based on the tvonics
DTR-HD500 ---- if you look on their website the firmware updates are the same numbers as the
Toshiba --- see http://www.tvonics.com/software-upgrade/A1206
but apparently Toshiba have told people who have been in contact not to use these as they
wont work.
see forums.digitalspy.co.uk/sho…626
I have just purchased one today. Two of my local Tescos in Chelmsford Essex were sold out but the third one I tried in Maldon had two on the shelf. The ticket price was £299 but I asked them to check and it was incorrectly priced! £129 was the price and I duly paid. Thanks to this site for letting me know and helping me save £50 on the best online price...
Got last one on shelf at Mereway Used save £13 wys £90 till spit and £5 wys £50 on non food from the Metro so another £18 off

No search on the epg though so back to the tedium of having to find progs manually (See post below, it may have been introduced in F100!!)

emailed toshiba, told them i had a problem which is one of the problems fixed by the firmware updated that is linked on this thread, here's their response:

"Thank you for your recent email regarding your HDR5010KB.

I am afraid you cannot download firmware updates for this model and we cannot email them to you either. However if you contact us with your full address details we can send you the latest firmware on a USB stick and installation instructions.

If we can be of any further assistance please don’t hesitate to contact us either via email or on the no. below"

I'll let you know what version number the firmware is once the usb stick arrives.

It seems rather crazy that they can't just email it or put it on their ftp, usb drives are expensive and so is postage.

did you download it from the A V forum?

I have just emailed Toshiba again with my address ---- i will let you know if i get a response .
Seems strange to me that the firmware updates are not supported on their website.
